It was looking like a solid Andalusian win until a unit of Arab cavalry got behind the the Andalusian flank and rolled up too many units. Well played carpenkm.

The Soisses got off to a good start after setting up a neat flank attack but from then it all began to go wrong as the subroman foot proved to be no match for the real thing. A final cavalry charge that mowed down three units gave an unfair gloss to the result.

Credit to carpenkm for stepping in late.

Good game. This was a tough fight and the large mobile forces engaged managed to traverse wide areas of the field in the course of the battle and in the end the Magyars advantage in cavalry numbers may have made the difference,

Morat (French/Norman) drew with Hari72 (Daliami/Khorasan) 54-54

Brutal fight across a mostly open battlefield. Daliami horse archers took a heavy toll of the French in the opening stages. Dangerous elephant attack dealt with but only after some serious casualties were inflicted. As the battle extended into a lengthy series of melees across the battlefield, the French managed to start to get some counter blows in.

In the end the French were left with decent numbers of heavy foot, and the Daliami with sizeable horse contingent - and with light fading the generals agreed to withdraw for the night. Honours (and score) even.

Many thanks to Hari72 for a terrific fight. And thanks to the organisers for arranging such a great tournament.

Morat (English) beat edb1815 (Scandinavian) 50-22

English occupied a series of low hills and placed Heavy horse and archers on the left. Light Hobilar horse on the right.

Scandinavian foot pushed on fast and threw themselves into the English spears and dismounted knights. For about the first time this season, the English line held, giving enough time for the heavy cavalry to strike from the left.

Scandinavians held up well, and produced large quantities of horse to produce a series of moments of real concern - but in the end the English just about did enough. The score belies the fight that edb1815 made of this - it felt much closer throughout.

Cavalry to the Rescue

An open battle field with no place to hide and a spot or two of rough ground. The intimidating Greek force was one to respect and a prolonged period of manoeuvre was undertaken to try and obtain advantage. The Greeks had some Heavy Artillery and the fragile Seleucid Elephant did not want to meet an untimely end.

Ultimately the Seleucid force tried to pivot at the last moment but to no real avail and the Greeks closed and started to wear down and flank the Seleucid force at one point gaining a 20 point advantage. The end seemed neigh...

This lead ultimately was over turned by the Seleucid cavalry. One unit of Xystophoroi with commander who had defeated a unit of Greek cavalry and pursed it nearly off the other side of the map. It finally stopped and was able to turn the Greek Flanks. Another unit of Seleucid Armoured Noble Cavalry again finally stopped pursuit of a defeated unit of Greek Cav to have a stunning turn hitting two Greek units in the rear.

Add to this the Zealots holding and another unit of Xystophoroi holding off a Greek Xystophoroi with General turn after turn the Cavalry really did come to the rescue in this battle.

A truly close run thing against an opponent who could have won the battle bar for the roll of the dice...

Good good defensive position for the Persians with big woods on both flanks.
They looked to have won the skirmish battles and thus secured the woods from the Samnites.
But the position was not strong enough to face down the pikes, who could attack or sit back as they chose.

Morat (English) drew with Garokan (German CIty) 53-49

Both sides drew up on low hills across a broad valley.

There followed a long series of cautious feints and approaches with light forces, the English lights being lured forward and comprehensively dealt with by their German foes. As the German light forces pushed forward onto the main English army the latter roused and looked to strike the German right.

What followed was a rapid German descent on their left that looked to have secured a decisive (and frankly well earned) win. But this was balanced on the other flank, where the English dismounted knights set about their foes and started to make inroads. A single English heavy cavalry unit made a material difference here.

In then end, I think nightfall saved the English - significant German forces were wheeling towards the remains of the English and would have needed only a few short turns to secure a deserved win.

Many thanks to Garokan for a well fought battle - where he deserved more than a draw.
