BMW 2009 (Blue Mountains)

Post by DaiSho »

Well, a good time was had by all (except for the guys who died on the Field of Glory - but that was all for the greater good).

Around 12 players turned up, with some additions and some subtractions over the three days.

I managed to pull 2nd place out of the mix. I think people were underestimating my 10mm figures and assumed they would be a walk-over. Thus my cunning plan worked :).

I used a Romanesque Palmyran army as follows:

3 x Troop commanders
1 x Cataphract BG (6's)
4 x Light Horse BG's (4's)
4 x Legionaries (mix of Armoured and Protected but all Average) (4's)
2 x Auxilliaries (all Armoured) (4's)
1 x Palmyran Foot (Light foot) (6's)

for a total of 12 BG's and 599 AP's.

Sounds good. I have only got 600AP's at the moment, but could probably boost that to 700 with minimal effort (just increasing the Romans to better quality will eat most of those points).

Any time you're up for a game let me know.

I played a game at the weekend using 6mm troops rather than 28mm. It looked so much better with the smaller guys.

I also use 6mm and I think it looks better.

Overall, I'd agree, but I find that with 6mm the size disparity against 15's is too much and it looks totally wrong. With the 10's it seems to look better when playing against 15's. Sure, they are very clearly different sized figures, but except in the extreme example where you've got 10's going up against 25mm high "15's" they look ok.

I have been painting up some additions to my Palmyrans, but in the mean time being adding in some 'ring in's' from my "Tin Soldier" Hoplite army. Now that looks weird :) 36mm(ok, I exaggerate slightly) tall "15's" being supporting archers for 10mm tall "10's" :)

They need to be taller so that they can shoot over their heads.

You could use the "bigger" guys as elites and the "smaller" guys as average :D

Ian are you using the 10mm stuff at MOAB? I am interested in how it all looks. I have been thinking of Hussites in 10mm - could be the only way to buy all the war wagons.

Dunno if I'll be at MOAB yet - won't know until I get my roster... but I'm using them at Newcastle if you're coming up to take a gander.

I really like the look of the 10mm armies I have seen (one at the IWF in Melb and a few at Cancon last year) but think they look a bit silly on the same table as 15's. It makes it look less like a simulation, makes it harder to suspend disbelief and reinforces that they are only counters to represent troops. Similar to having both 10mm and 15mm people on a train display.

- that said however there is already a huge range of scales within the 15mm ranges. I am using AB "15s" for my free-range, grain-fed callisthenicised spartans and xyston for my other hoplites as the Abs are almost 20mm.

unfortunately I cannot get to Newcastle. It is looking like a really good comp.

i even started a 25mm Roman army. But then I could not attend and they pulled the 25mm.

Good luck.

I will probably get banned and whipped but I dont think the game is a simulation anyway so its not a problem for me, especially when I see units on the board doing crazy freestyle maneuvers in perfect conjunction with the rest of the army.
