Boars Snout

Post by UlricUlfsson »

Would the Viking Boar's Snout formation be allowed in the game? I would see it made up of a custom 2 man stand at the head, with normal 4 man stands behind it creating a "flying v" shape.

There is no reason you can't model a boars snout but it won't have any game effect.

From my memory of training people to fight in a snout the 'wedge' was very shallow but it worked a treat.

Reminds me of the Cone of Zones used in DB*. I guess you could locate each BG back a couple places with each BG running 3 deep. An 8 man unit in front flanked by 8 or 6 man units.

Below is an 8 man unit followed by two 6-man units on either flank. ACtually groups don't have to be edge to edge / corner to corner, so you could put the flanking units behind and slightly overlaped for support and the whole thing could group move. Not sure how you would measure wheels though or what use this would be, maybe to protect flanks versus mounted.

edited - couldn't get the asci to work.....

Brings back fearful memories of WRG 7th edition where every army that could make a wedge would and then attack the very corner of your battle line so they could get the whole wedge into contact and you fought back with 3 figs, goodbye main battle formation.... glad to see that didn't make it into these rules. :)

In a way it has. Anyone who had a successful wedge charge has probably got both an impact advantage in the times when it would count (lancers in the open) and the overlaps dont count at impact. its just abstracted into the POA classification and the impact rules.

But it isn't limited to specific armies like wedges were. All lancers in this case have the same behavior at impact, not just certain armies where they are allowed to form wedge as a national difference. And while overlaps don't count at impact, at least one side, normally the smaller unit in WRG, doesn't get to count about twice as many figures fighting as its target. (5 vs 3 in 7th, could be up to 7 vs 3 in 5th and 6th.)
