I read Arsenal of Democracy and Freedoms Forge which outline how the head of GM and Kaiser basically turned the US into one giant military factory. Especially interesting was Kaiser who built the landing ships the landed on Normandy and the escort carriers that beat Japan. At one point his 4 main ships yards were producing a new ship every 2 weeks. Ford and GM in detroit were also interesting, ford built the b-24 bombers and GM built the shermans in and around detroit in their auto plants.

I think the Ford assembly line for the b-24s, Willow Run, was the largest single building in the world at that time
