Mogilev on Manstein

Post by codman »

Looking for some ideas for Mogilev on Manstein. Soren has an interesting forward strategy that defends the outpost line but I'm wondering if it would be better to fall back to the large river that runs through the city and grind up the Soviets on the 3 bridges, as it appears that forcing surrenders is the most expedient way clear the map. Falling back would also reduce the frontage one has to cover and possibly allow counter attacks both north and south of Mogilev. I'd like to get both a DV and the bonus Jagtiger but wallowing through the hordes till turn 12 or 13 means it's either the DV or the Jagtiger, so sugestions are very welcome.

Thanks!!

Hello

In my opinion pulling back is wrong strategy. The fortification hexes are similar to rivers and they better protect your tanks and ATs. Besides you wont have enough time to move forward after turn 10.

I have just finished Mogilev on Manstein and got both DV and Jagtiger in Krasnopole. You can use some gamey tactics occupying Bykhaw with a heavily entrenched infantry waiting for the final wave of tanks. These 5 or 6 strong tanks wont attack it just sitting around the city.

The key is to as fast as possible destroy russians near Kopys /15,2/ and move range hero artilery into Drybin area. Use thick forest as protection and destroy AA unit. Also bombard russian Katyushas from north during this trip.

ALERT : prepare yourself for turn 7 when Captain Andreyevich a russian special plane unit attacks. Dont even think engeging it in a direct attack. During turn 6 hide all of your planes. Then use AA. He once wiped my 5 star exp 12 strenght FW 190 off the map in a single attack.

Krasnopole is not AA protected so 2 consecutive level bomber attacks and a reliable infantry sturm can do the trick. I used my 15 str Friedrich Pein to do it.

I do deploy forward. However I deploy 3 Flak (2 Flak.36 and the captured Flak.40, the SPAA are too weak in Manstein) forward to protect my units in the city. A frontline of Tiger.II, then I rush artillery behind. to start attacking right away

The auxiliary Me.163 is usually badly damaged right on turn one, but I don't care much about it.

It is easy to capture Kopys in the north on turn 1, one Grenadier on the bridge supported by artillery, then a strong Tiger.II in the city. In contrast in the south it is a bit trickier and I can clear the city but not capture it, so it is OK to leave a strong Tiger.II over the bridge. Meanwhile in the center I expand my pocket, one to get more breathing room, and two to keep the enemy as cramped as possible the AI is not good at mass attack, which gives you tons of surrenders options and help clear the enemy faster.

Then the north group can quickly finish the weak soviets force in the north to come hit the enemy center group in the flank for more encirclement. In the center I use mostly Tiger.II which are more or less impervious to enemy artillery, though a pair of Grenadier help a lot to clear enemy in close terrain.

I clear the south bridge by turn 5-6

Make best use of the numerous auxiliaries to distract the enemy attack away from your core units.

Defending behind the river is not out of question, though a bit slow, killing only a few enemy each turn, and the enemy will have time to destroy all you auxiliaries. In fact you are significantly stronger than the enemy so attack is recommended.
I clear the map and get the Jagdtiger with very little losses to my core units.
