A christmas miracle? The inept Hojo just held off a challenge to its home province from the tiresomely persistent Ikko Ikki, 44-29 (in the Monks' favour). As it was an Attack scenario, this meant that Gavin needed to break my army to claim victory, which he just failed to do as night fell and my 'samurai' crept away back to their castle.

The oddest thing about this strange game was that the loss of my C-in-C (the stationary general) incurred an 18% loss penalty and that was a disagreeable surprise to me. My cavalry once again were blown up by enemy shooting, which on the other hand was no great shock, as the same happened in our previous encounter. So there we are, until next time Gavin, and well played.

Happy Christmas everyone.

We'll have to get up earlier next time (or light torches at dusk). It was a long shot but we were surprised but the late success. However, good defense Alan, Hojo can certainly run. At least, Hojo Ujiyasu will have to appoint another camp commandant, and do without his luxurious field tent and amenities for his Christmas dinner as it's a long way back to the fortress (unless of course you run all the way  ).

You beat me to it. I was eyeing Shimizu, but held off as you are a retainer to the great lord Oda who I did not wish to cross swords with quite yet. As it stands, I now have two honorable adversaries, good...more honor for me to attain. 😉

Nobunaga seems to be living up to his title of the first "Great Unifier" of Japan as it seems not only is Takeda Shingen doing his bidding but Asakura Yoshikage may still meet his fate of ritual suicide at Rokubō Kenshō-ji temple due to betrayal (Well... Brian's persistence to gain hegemony over the Ikko-Ikki, since he's again after them like a dog with a bone.) Meanwhile, Akai Naomasa is quietly gaining ground unhindered by the great clans and Tokugawa Ieyasu gambles on subduing Yoshikage.(the 8th Monshu of the Jōdo Shinshū Hongan-ji wishes him luck, as this may indeed finally free the Ikko-Ikki from Yoshikage's clutches..now if we can only defeat Nobunaga, we may be free of all Daimyo despots! )

The mighty Ikko Ikki rebels have been over run for the third time and are once again retainers of Oda.

Oda, 40%, beats Ikko Ikki, 65%, and claims the Ikko Ikki Home Province once more after a fierce struggle.

Rennyo the 8th Monshu Out Deployed, Out Manoeuvred, and Out Shot the Oda invasion army for most of the battle but as the Oda army out numbered the Ikko Ikki units there were enough Oda Warriors to break the Ikko Ikki with 5 moves to go.

I hesitate to correct the great Imagawa Ujizane but it' two Daimyo's and a reluctant monk who hasn't had time to enjoy meditation in his temple for some time due to two persistent Daimyos's knocking forcefully on my door with their multitude of followers. Honestly how can anyone sleep soundly at night!)

😅 Yes, meditation might be a problem. I'll offer you a potential deal. If by fortune I beat you and kill your general, if the rules don't prohibit it, I will release you from your retainership. You'll be free to pursue your own plans for uniting Japan under a Buddhist directorship. We might agree not to 'bother' each other for a round or two afterwards as an 'understanding'. If I lose, I assume I'll have plenty of time to meditate myself in the dungeon of your castle. 🤔

I'm flattered and more than a bit tempted, but alas that would be extremely dishonorable...even for a monk

Lascar & I have been discussing the Home Province Attack/Defence rule and feel that there should be something other than the Home Province defender having to hide in the woods at the base line and play for a Draw.
We feel that the rules at present do not portray the Japanese Military Customs or make for a historically based Battle.
Most Japanese Home Provinces would have had a massive Fortress as the seat of Power.
Lascar has suggested that the Terrain should be Mountains.
Any other ideas anyone ?

The amendments below were not only to encourage more open battles but to discourage this run and hide tendency.
  • If an attack on a home province is declared and the challenger's army is broken, the challenger becomes the retainer
  • In any battle if either Daimyo is killed in battle and they lose the battle, the clan surrenders to the winning clan and becomes their retainer.
The takeaway from your discussion is (correct me if I'm wrong) is that the defender is still not inclined to risk taking out the cinc, or playing to win. I'm inclined to think the solution lies in one or more of these choices.
  • to replace the attack/defend game with an open battle with the same consequences
  • add more points to the defender.
  • change terrain to mountainous
  • increase the size of the attack/defend game to very large
Thoughts :?:

I'm not familiar with sieges in feudal Japan(which I assume is what an attack on the home province represents). I am a bit more familiar with sieges in the late medieval and early renaissance periods. In many historical cases, sieges were thwarted/lifted when a relief army was sent to relieve the defenders. We might consider a special battle representing the relief army attacking the besieging army(open battle). If the relief army wins, the attack on the home province is thwarted. If the relief army loses, it is considered that the castle falls and so too the home province. This option dispenses with special rules for mountainous terrain or very large armies or changing the points balance. Might be a bit complicated or not to others taste, but it's something to consider. 🙂

I think you make a good point Alex. I tend to favour a very large attack and defend, as this will increase the time taken to conclude the battle (This could represent the need for a more prolonged siege of the province).
  • Thus, the attacker would then need to weigh up, the need for a protracted engagement, which would stop them from issuing other challenges, as the battle would take much longer.
  • Moreover, this would give other players a chance to take more than one province in the same amount of campaign time.
Another option of course could be a scenario game?

The number of moves can be set when you set up a game, you can go to 100+ moves.
For Very Large Forces the Attacker has 1800 pts, the Defender 1620 pts.
