Assessment of capital defense

Post by rgp151 »

It seems that for some reason enemy wizards don't want to defend their capitals. I've seen capitals that are entirely undefended at various points in the game, from early to late. This is true even with wizards who have tons of units and many 9 stacks all over the map, yet their capital city is undefended or very poorly defended.

The most challenging aspect of attacking a capital is dealing with the tower, which you can't interact with. I don't really care for this. Is there a way to turn off capital towers? There should be.

The capital towers end up strongly favoring Sorcery and Paladins, due to Magic Immunity. If they are going to exist, they should ignore Magic Immunity so that capital assaults aren't simply a matter of amassing Paladins or using Sorcery to make Magic Immune units.

In Classic 1.5 and I believe 1.3 as well, capital fights were always quite exciting because the enemy wizards tended to fill their capitals with high end fantastic units. I have yet to see a single fantastic unit in a capital, other than Hell Hounds. For the most part, capital fights are a matter of easily killing trivial units while the tower takes shots at you. Its really all about how to survive the tower, which again is not fun because its just a static thing.

I'd rather see no towers and much more challenging stacks in the capitals. The other issue with the towers is that they are all teh same of revery school of magic. With fantastic units, however, there are big differences between the different schools, such that your stack for attaching one capital may not work for another. Maybe one wizard is using Sky Drakes and Djinn or massed Storm Giants (a common one in 1.5), and other has Death Knights and Shadow Demons, while another is using Gorgons and Spiders, etc. But in this game its like, towers with mid-level normal units, if there are any units at all.

What I would like to see is the capitol being defended as best as the AI can & that when you do/if you capture it, the game ends for that wizard...no escaping to other towns.
Or at least make it an option.
