Tournament Scoring

Post by AdmiralYamamoto »

This thread is to discuss the scoring in tournaments. I think we have a pretty good system but it does promote running up the score against weaker players. Anybody have any other suggestions on scoring?

I also wanted to point out another issue with the "timed out" scoring that we currently use. I know that Shards is looking into a glitch in the round 3 scoring for Blondus in the latest Victorious tournament where his final score was actually reduced because his opponent did not finish. I feel that Blondus also got short changed some points in round 2 when his opponent did not finish.

Here is how I feel the scoring should go for matches where one player does not finish. To me the offended player should get the higher of his current score at the end of the round or the "No Show" average score (usually 90 points) per game. To me this should apply to any game where one player does not get to take all the turns allotted to them (usually 15 turns). The one exception would be if one player simply did not watch his opponents final move. I suspect this registers as a game not finished even though it really was.

I am not sure how the current scores are determined though. Is it all automatic or is there some human input? If it is automatic how does the program know which player was the slow player? I can see a possible situation where the slow player finally takes his last turn just before the end of a round so that the faster player does not have time to take his turn. Would the automatic point adjustment get this correct? I can see this situation happening especially with the possible time differences between where players play. I actual came home on my lunch hour last time to make sure I got my final move in and it made the difference in my standing.

Maybe someone out there has a brilliant new system that makes things even more fair and fun for everyone.

I wonder if the round's final score should be the point differential, not just the points scored. Then every lost unit would count.

The unfinished games are a real problem but of course many will have a valid reason for not doing so. Ultimately it is just a game. I think the St-Lo type issue is a bigger problem as it's not a fair playing field if you have the time and inclination to test it in hotseat.

Congratulations to the top 3 -- only 11 points separated 1st from 3rd! Great tournament, Shards, and all who participated!

It would have helped me to do a Hot-seat runthrough but I didn't know it was available. I did get truly squashed by SagsGames77 though, he outplayed me for sure.

How bout a tourney not based on Swiss scoring - a double elimination tournament based on advancing if one player wins both games in a pairing, or if it's one win each go to the score, high score for both games advancing in that case. It'll make for more matches with a winners' bracket and a losers' bracket.

Hello Steve. I did review the final moves of our Market Garden match. It has been removed from my play list. I cannot access it anymore. I do not know why it is still on your list. I am sure the computer just wants to keep reminding you that I am still out there causing trouble. :D

I was thinking the same thing. It would change players strategies slightly. This could be interesting.

I like this idea. It might be a lot more work though for the organizers. Do we have enough tournament scenarios for something like this?

I was also wondering if some new scenarios could be designed that initially would not be available for Hot Seat play while the tournament lasted. I don't know if this is possible or not. It would force everyone to play "Blind" the first time.

It's theoretically possible, but it would be fairly high risk as we wouldn't be able to test and verify bugs as easily
