Romanian Mnt infantry rated higher than Gerbigsjäger?

Post by heinzrondorf »

I just started another GC and I am about to start GC42 with Vitebsk. Normally I don't pay much attention to the auxiliary units but for some reason I checked them out today and I was a bit surprised to see the Romanian Mnt infantry (Romanian Mountain Infantry) has a SA rating of 6 compared to Wehrmacht Infanterie which has 4 and Gerbigsjäger/Pioniere/Grenadier which all have 5. The only German infantry with SA 6 at this time of the war is Fallschirmjäger.

It's not until the introduction of 43 Wehrmacht Inf, 43 Gebirgsjäger etc the Germans get SA of 6 or higher.

The Romanian mountain infantry is quite overpowered it seems at this stage in the war compared to Gerbigsjäger in particular which would be the closest equivalent. I guess it is because the devs did not have enough time/resources to make separate 43 variations of the smaller nations infantry since they do not feature so much in the game so they overpowered them a bit early on so they are not too weak in the later campaigns but still...

Or are they overpowered? I know these units were the Romanians elite infantry and performed well according to numerous sources.

What are your thoughts?

I would like to finish with a telegram sent by the new Marshal Erich von Manstein (promoted on 1 July 1942) to Marshal Ion Antonescu:

To Marshal Antonescu,I report the fall of Sevastopol. The Romanian divisions, which I had the honor to command, had fulfilled their duty. They had an essential contribution to the conquest of Bastion II, the attack through rough, wooded terrain against the Sapun Heights. Another Romanian division entered Sevastopol together with the German units. I think with profound gratitude to the sacrifices the Romanian Mountain Corps made for the final victory in Crimea.Marshal von Manstein.

The Romanian vânători de munte saw action in World War II on the Eastern Front in some of the harshest battles — including the sieges of Sevastopol and Stalingrad — where their performance lived up to their reputation: virtually all their commanders from brigade level and up received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, with general Mihail Lascăr being the first foreigner to receive Oak Leaves on 22 November 1942 (see List of foreign recipients of the Knight's Cross). The greatest single achievement of the vânători de munte was the capture of Nalchik on 2 November 1942, the farthest point of the Nazi Germany advance into the Caucasus. This victory earned Romanian Brigadier General Ioan Dumitrache the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.[2]

I think they were actually brigades instead of divisions. I believe they started to call them divisions because the Italians used the term “divisions” for their cavalry brigades and the Romanians did not want to seem underrepresented in the war effort.

The Gebirgsjagers had more artillery: 48 guns to 32 (not including the 18 75mm Mountain Guns in the Support battalions attached to each regiment). 12 Guns were also 150mm which is a large increase over the 8 Romanian 100mm (the over 24 guns were 75mm.

The Gebirgsjagers were originally organized into 9 battalion divisions (not including support battalions). They were reorganized into smaller 6 battalion divisions, a reorganization that was planned for the entire German infantry, which increased their firepower ratio (ratio of guns to battalions) even greater. So I think you are right about it being a developers decision.

One interesting point about those commendations you referenced.... You need to continually praise allies if you want to keep asking them for more troops. Romanian Mountain troops were considered elite, and that many Knights Crosses certainly suggests high performance, but it is interesting how many German tank aces only started being recognized after Germany was losing the war (1943 and later). You do not need to recognize/motivate people as much when you are winning (you do not often hear about German tank aces in the early years of the war or in 1941/42 when vast amounts of Soviet armor was being destroyed).

Thanks for your feedback! Always interesting to learn from other forum members :).

I think we can conclude they are slightly overrated in the game.

Greek Mountain infantry also have SA 6.
Fortunately it's not too hard to change the equipment file if it's causing a problem.
