Yes, in Brandenburg we are busy burning catholic idols and translating the bible into the local dialect. Happy times!

In Saxony the Imperials (PeterThePainter) beat the Transylvanians (Lascar) 41 -13.

My opponent made all the running. Having seen how the Transylvanians had performed in the previous rounds and with advice from the Kiwiwarlord to deploy deep and play for a draw, I did just that. Fortunately, there was an area of open terrain towards the rear of my deployment area, ideal for an army stuffed with Later Tercios.

I was awed by the number of Transylvanian units and surprised that I actually had a numerical advantage (17400 men against 13300), those Later Tercios contain a lot of manpower, but I was not emboldened enough to advance. I wanted the largely open terrain to my front and little room behind for cavalry units to get to my rear.

Lascar steadily advanced and although my artillery did some damage as he approached, he was able to withdraw the damaged units to allow them to rally. Eventually as his infantry arrived, having marched across the whole battlefield, I advanced my left flank where my infantry was able to support my cavalry and push back his cavalry heavy right flank before closing on his centre to put his musketeers and Haiduks to flight with cold steel. When the end came it was very sudden.

My opponent felt there were too many Imperial Heavy Foot to cope with and that was probably correct in the open terrain. Until I closed to charge range all those muskets were inflicting serious casualties, but the Later Tercios were able to take them and still win the melees. Had the battle been on more broken terrain I am not sure the outcome would have been the same as the negative cohesion modifier would not have come into play.

Well played to Lascar.

Saxony is back with the true faith, and more importantly (that’s correct, isn’t it?), contributing to the coffers of the Empire once again.

Reading the "Today in History" column of this morning's newspaper the first heading was :
" 1517 Martin Luther nails 95 Theses to the door at Wittenberg Palace Church marking the start of the Protestant Reformation "
Well we have started a little later, but the Protestors are doing well here too !

Note it is the 31st of October here in New Zealand as I write this.

The Rebels under General Snugglebunnies have failed to capture the Palatinate.
We advanced resolutely beside a forest with our dragoons tasked with clearing it. But a single round of shooting discomforted our dragoons and most of them fled the field in an absolute minimum of time. Our light horse and arquebusiers on the right wing played lively with their countparts and had the best of it.
But as his heavy infantry line turned and retired we decided we would not advance further while being enfiladed from the forest and we turned about and retired to a defensive position away from the forest. There was some shooting and a few minor combats but the main lines only came in range of each other as dusk was falling.
We lost 7%, the rebels 10%, but we held the field and the Palatinate for the Emperor.

Bohemia has been secured for the Protestant cause!

GentlemanRanker’s German Protestant army defeats KiwiWarlord’s Catholic League force by 38 to 62

On a flat and fairly open map, the Protestant force maximised the available firepower, deployed well back, and awaited the inevitable onslaught. With no available hills, the three units of artillery were deployed angled to fire through gaps in the firing line, to protect them from darting charges by the enemy light cavalry. What cavalry there was, was deployed behind the infantry line, to act as a speed bump to delay the more numerous Catholic kurassiers.

The Catholic right wing concentrated their main force, led by a tercio and a veteran tercio, which advanced steadily under fire, and were able to charge home without suffering disruption from the desperate Protestant fusillades. The Catholic kurassiers followed behind, rolling over their Protestant counterparts, and eventually silencing all the troublesome artillery.

However, in the centre, and on the Protestant right wing, superior firepower prevailed, and all other opposing Catholic infantry units were eventually routed, including a second tercio. As the game drew to a close, it seemed that the Catholic general might yet force a draw and hold the province, as the Protestants had seemed to have no counter to that rampaging veteran tercio; but they were able to route a sufficient number of light and ancillary units to get over the victory line, with three turns to spare.

Well played Brian, you did not make it easy.

GentlemanRanker,

you were defending Bohemia, Brian was attempting to recapture it, so a draw is all you needed to hold it.

But well done on your win.
