Models depicting lances slung on horsemen's backs

Post by Nijis »

This is a just a small visual detail. The game depicts lancers slinging their lances on their backs while engaging in melee. I realize that none of the visuals are supposed to be a literal depiction of what's going on, and it doesn't affect gameplay at all, but I was just curious if there is any artistic or textual evidence for this practice in ancient or medieval warfare.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century lancers had slings, and there's no technological reason to my knowledge why this could not have been adapted earlier, but I was just wondering.

Also, is there any textual or visual evidence for lancers doing something else with their lances after impact - at least with those lances that were too unwieldy to use in hand-to-hand fighting. Holding them in the shield hand? Discarding them?

I agree that this aspect of the animation of some units is speculative and in some cases probably dubious.

Ah well. I was hoping for some depictions of slings, as they certainly make some cavalry tactics, like lance-armed horse archers shooting, a bit easier to visualize.
