Battle of Gerberoy
Background introduction:
May 9 1453,John FitzAlan,Earl of Arundel departed from Gournay, besieged Gerberoy which located on the conjunction of Picardy,Normandy and Beauvaisis. The Beligerent was Arundel’s approximately 3000 strong vs La Hire and Xaintrailles’s 600-1800 strong.Outnumbered behind broken walles, the French was caught by fear, therefore unleashed a desperate sortie.La Hire lead a cavalry contingent bypass the besieging army, went westward to surprise the English reinforcements who didn’t move in coordination. The minimum estimation of French strength probably came from the number of La Hire’s attachment. He routed the English until Épinettes, outskirt of Laudencourt, which was on the suburb of Gournay. Then he turns back towards Gerberoy, hunter became prey.
The valley west of Gerberoy, was named as Vallée de Arondel, after his capture and death. Like many late phase battles in HYW,its scale was small.
Design notes
The relic of Gerberoy has been well preserved in Normandy, some part of walls and gates remained there, which can be googled.
And unlike Patay, the landscape didn’t changed too much,in google map forests and slopes can be figured out.Actually I used google earth to check the altitudes of the nearby terrain.Gerberoy is 140-160 by estimation ,forest of Caumont is 190-220,valley of Arondel is 150-180,there is a swath of slope west north of Gerberoy.Lands between Gerberoy and Wambez is relatively low, which is 120-130 by estimation, lands between Gerberoy and the Wambez stream is likewise relatively low. When drawing the map I minus 100 to all.For game experience enlarged the size of the castle, which in reality no larger than 1.5x0.9km2(means 2x2tiles in game)It is impossible to draw all the landscape from Gerberoy to Gournay in a 87x87 maximum map without dramatic distortion. Therefore the game map west bordered at the start of Rue de Gournay instead of the terminal.
Missions and Rules
Play as French: Take English camp(5 turns without interruption)and routed 50% enemy.
There is a Vp of Reinforcement rendezvous point for each side. English’s rendezvous point is on the start of Rue de Gournay, ultimate west of the map,French’s on the ultimate east,Road to Beauvais.
English reinforcements will arrive at every 6 turns per time,French’s at every 4 turns per time. However those of French’s will not be available unless English play as nasty camper before walls(less than 4 units assaulting after 2 LGs have been gathered on the stream band)
English will get fragmented when French take their siege camp.
Enemy will have the day if they seized the citadel(5 turns without interruption).
Play as English: Take the citadel (5 turns without interruption)and repel French cavalry attack
As La Hire had all English reinforcements routed,Vp2 no longer exist.Player have to find a ground to counterattack.
English rearguard gets disrupted at the start.
Enemy will have the day, when player suffered 50% casualties and lost the siege camp more than 5 turns without interruption.
Testing problem and solutions.
La Hire’s contingent always blocked by English infantry during testing, then I changed the script made English AI focus on besieging, and when playing as English,La Hire has already passed the valley. That happened cuz the valley west of Gerberoy is truly a narrow path,1-2 units can easily barricade.French reinforcements Vp is barely unreachable for English,I’m really concerning adding two of light cavalry units for English in future MP version, what do our honorable player think? And which side is suitable for MP,French or English?Plz tell me ur opinion if anyone played this scenario.
I’m happy to announce that Rouvray1429(Day of Herrings) is under development.
