I think I had saw a topic somewhere mentioning that the author succeeded in doing that, but now I can't find the report when I want to create that behaviour for something I'm trying to work on myself.
I have checked every lua script I can find, but don't think there is one official scenario with this behaviour.
Removing a hero is possible and already done in Operation Mercury from AO 41, as we all know. Now I'd like to have one that allows you to assign one during scenario, so some kind of "upgrading a hero" behaviour can be achieved: you remove the older one, then create a new hero with same name but different traits to make it looks like an "upgrade". What's more, you can even make him arriving with his brand new equipment, as units already deployed on the battlefield cannot be assigned with a stock hero during a scenario.

check PC1 remake mod, pretty sure first scenario of 1939 has a unit with hero in it spawning.
removing a unit and spawning a new one with a hero in it can be done as well.
even removing a hero and replacing him witha new one can be done if the hero is unique enough.

Another question, have you experimented with the max number of traits a hero can have? there is no limit(i know of), but beyond 5 traits the hero-chart starts looking crowded
