A Bit of Help

Post by nickj »

In the quest to find a local opponent I've made a deal with my cousin. I'll buy the metal, he'll paint. Since I'm more gainfully employed it works out well (he's a game shop clerk). To that end I have a couple of favors to ask:
1.) We've played a quick game of Ord. Burgundian vs. Ord. French. We like the period so I'm considering getting a Ord Burgundian army (him) and Milanese or German army to play. Sound like a good pairing that will get lots of life? Should I consider a different pairing?

2.) He doesn't feel comfortable designing an army yet and I'm opposed to designing an opponents army. To that end, since he wants knights, footsloggers, and gunmen (he's a Warhammer Brettonian player) could someone suggest a good 800 point build for the Ord. Burgundians?

I'm hoping this wins over some converts at the local shop too.

1 * FC CinC
3 * TC

6 Ordonance knights (Dr/HARM/Avg/lance/sw)
6 Ordonance knights (Dr/HARM/Avg/lance/sw)
2 household knights (Dr/HARM/Sup/lance/sw)
6 Ordonance longbow (Dr/Prot/Avg/Bow/sw)
6 Ordonance longbow (Dr/Prot/Avg/Bow/sw)
6 mixed pike/longbow
3 (Dr/Prot/Avg/DefSp)
3 (Dr/Prot/Avg/Bow/sw)
6 mixed pike/longbow
3 (Dr/Prot/Avg/DefSp)
3 (Dr/Prot/Avg/Bow/sw)
6 mixed pike/longbow
3 (Dr/Prot/Avg/DefSp)
3 (Dr/Prot/Avg/Bow/sw)
4 Ordonance Crossbow (Dr/Prot/Avg/Xbow)
6 Italian Crossbow (Dr/Prot/Avg/Xbow)
4 Handgunners (Dr/Unprot/Avg/Firearm)

You could probably get away with dropping the ordnance avg knights as much as possible but this is the list I have.

Why not both start with the starter armies ? It's less to buy and paint than 800 point armies and you'll get games finished quicker whilst you're still learning. When you played a few games you'll then have the experience to decide which troops to add to increase the armies up to 800 points.

I would agree with both using starter armies. The games will be simpler and give you and your friend chance to learn the rules. If the figures are generic you could then change directions to other medieval armies and once you know what troop types/combinations you both like you can than flesh out your plans at world conquest with a bit more knowledge.

We did the starter armies via cutouts and we'd like to try full size. I may go starter armies anyway but we'll discuss it this weekend.

Play 25mm and use his warhammer figs, Bretonians *cough* = French anyway. See if you can scrounge up some more warhammer Empire figs, they're a blatant rip of Later Medieval Germany =P.
Very good suggestion trying out the rules with a couple starter army matchups. Fun times!
