Metagame

Post by paulcummins »

with Britcon coming up, with its wide open expanses of time periods (well 2) what is the state of the metagame?

Armies that were (are?) scary - are they still? what will be this years 'broken' army list

what are the armies you have to be prepared to deal with?

- Super Shooty Cav?
- DomRom Swarm?
- SHNC Swarm?
- LH Swarm?
(should that have just been 'swarm')
- LB Spam?

let the cries of cheese and pokes with sharp sticks begin...

I thought that Pete Reilly's choice of Ancient Britons for the Challenge was inspired. He very nearly pulled off a tournament win with a very unfancied army because he won the metagame. Massed MF impact foot with loads of skirmishers and chariots are a tough ask for 100YW and the like.

At Britcon I expect a fair number of MB Dominates but that is well countered by Christian Nubian (which I think fits in the same period).

In the later period Longbow and Jannisaries will be pretty common but then so will Knights

I found they are also not bad against shooty cavalry.

Not much use against armoured infantry, though.

The real bane of the ABs are full blown Romans. The armoured MF Romans are tough but brittle, if the ABs win the impact they have a good chance, if not then they need numbers to help them. The Chariots are actually pretty good against the Dominate MF.

I think that at Britcon ABs will lose out in the metagame as there will be more nasty foot in the early period while in the totally open field at the Challenge decent heavy foot were thin on the ground.

OK so what does MLMB and MB stand for?

Do Pike armies do very well in British comps? Here in Victoria, Australia Pike based armies have won the last two comps. Both were themed (loosely), the first being Immortal Fire, Rise of Rome and Rome Triumphant which was won by Seleucids and the second being a 1000-1500AD comp won by Italian Condotta (Florentine).
So, is Australia behind the curve or ahead of it?

MB = Morally Bankrupt
MLMB = Marginally Less Morally Bankrupt

Having done some list checking for an Oz comp I'd go for on a different curve
