Not really. The better armor gives you the +POA, even though the HW negates the enemy's +POA.

My "guilded lily" Varangians were HF/Elite/Hvy Arm/Drill/HW. The stuff of legend. With a general in combat, they re-rolled misses. :-)

Gee now those superior unprotected undrilled heavy weapons Dacians don't seem so bad after all. Makes my cats glad Blathergut prefers ancients to dark ages

*Calls in a Thracian favour and adds some 'protected' HW dudes to the roll call.* They'll get the + for better armour! :P

Only if the enemy are Unprotected (and don't have HW). HW does not cancel enemy armour, it only cancels their armour advantage (if any).

The advantage of taking heavily armoured billmen/men-at-arms over armoured ones is that they get an extra POA against armoured enemies who don't have heavy weapons of their own. Bearing in mind that the armoured opponents in a WotR clash will be the very ones with the heavy weapons, it seems the upgrade to heavily armoured is just for the extra staying power versus missiles.

Unless of course you're playing some non-historical opponent.

Luckily those Seleucid types don't drill enough with the blade! :D

Darn DAcians are fighting with the Romans in Blatherguts army.
As for Selucids with blades, they are next on my to buy list from the Rafm ancients sale :P
Think its time to try out some drilled skilled swords of my own for a change. Will also have to get more bow troops to deal with those unarmored Dacians.

Not at all.

Vs Protected Pike:
Pike are + for 3 ranks + for a 4th rank = ++
Unprotected & Protected Heavy Weapons = + for heavy weapon so fighting at a disadvantage.
Armoured & Heavily Armoured = + for heavy weapon + for armour so fighting at evens.

Vs Armoured Spear:
Spear are + for 2 ranks
Unprotected Protected & Armoured Heavy Weapons = + for Heavy weapon so fight at evens
Heavily Armoured = + for Heavy Weapons + for armour so fight at an advantage.

There is a good reason to buy Armoured & heavily armoured heavy weapon. Probably less reason to pay for protected if given the option to go unprotected IMHO.

they attacy work very well although at 5's on impact your evens on meele as your hw is plus there sw is + and your hw clears armour but watch out for romans as there ssw and you dont get your hw +

also you should out match theem on bgs for extra dice.
