Early Republican Roman

This list gives a wodge of Hastati and Principes, with Triarii then taken as 1 per 4 Hastati.

What happens if you take 12 Hastati - does this mean that you take 2 Triarii? Or do you take 4? Or are you not allowed to take Hastati that isn't divisible by 4?

The 1 per 4 thing means you must take Hastati and Principes in multiples of 8.
