When a fighter is flying air cover for a tactical bomber, does it use its air attack or air defense rating?

A fighter supporting a Bomber fires on the attacker before the attacker fires on the bomber.
It fires with its Air Attack value.
There comes a time on every project when it is time to shoot the engineer and ship the damn thing.
