"Free" Event and Unit Images

Post by Shards »

New thing I found out today. All the event pictures from the original "Order of Battle - Pacific" campaigns are help in the games core files, rather than in the scenario folders.

This means that you can reference them from any scenario!

e.g. I've added "reinforcements" to an event popup in my Sandstorm MP map and I've got the reinforcement image from US Pacific for free (i.e. I don't have to include it in my scenario files) :)

I'm sure there's more in there, but I don't particularly want to go unpacking the asset bundles to figure out the full list right now :D

Well, since you let the cat out of the bag.... We need a complete list with images/names. I guess it is 'only' US/Japanese stuff?

Yes, I just discovered this myself in the past few days while tinkering around with official DLC.

Erik, the way you can tell whether the scenario will pluck an image from one of the resources.assets files is to look in the scenario folder itself. If the named image in the trigger effect is not in the folder, then the game is pulling it from the central files. You can then compile your own list by copying and pasting such image names to a text file. I believe the same applies to outcome photos.

Also, I am suspecting that it's not just Boot Camp / U.S. Pacific / Rising Sun but perhaps the first scenario in each campaign that they provide free. I have to take a look at that to confirm it but perhaps logistics requires them to do it this way for marketing reasons.

Don't say I do nothing for you!

Inside there is what all the images look like, and a Names.txt with the actual names you should use

Holy Smokes, this is huge! Not the file size, which is an economical 70MB, but the gesture. Thank you.

This saves a bunch of time because, yes, these photos can be reused in custom campaigns and scenarios. I shall not ask how you extracted these images - you would have to kill me if you told me - but I have an idea. Don't tell us/me! :?

Listen, this is going to sound silly to ask someone in your position, but are you sure this is OK to have done this and post it here? That is, nobody whose company has the initials T.A. is going to mind it?

By the way, I used a program called Bulk Rename Utility to rename the files so that they are ready for use in scenarios. I checked the program out, making sure that it was legitimate and safe. For example, any time such a program is mentioned on How-To Geek, I feel good about it.

Best of all, they provide a portable mode which means you can run the program from within a folder without having to install it. I always like that feature in a utility program.

Below is how the screen looked just before mass renaming. I highlighted the settings that I used (click the image to see them):

That's a good one, been using it for years now...
And judging by your screenshot there seems to be an updated version out...

It's cool, very effective. It comes with a 51-page manual, which I will read cover-to-cover. Believe that?

Hi!
The point is that you don't need to include the images with your scenarios. They're all inside the main game files, so you just need to use the name in the list I included and they automatically work!

I included the images so you could see what they looked like :-D

Well, it's nice to have them "in hand" too because you never know . . . Arrangements can change from version to version, as we have seen. Thanks again.

Shards, one courtesy deserves another, so I will offer my own collection of photos that I have accumulated over the years; over 400 so far and counting because I keep adding more.

Some of them are rather arcane, used once for a particular scenario in a unique situation, but the vast majority of them are useful, I believe. They are all in PNG format and pre-sized to the optimal 512 x 415 pixels. Being in PNG format, they are not taggable like JPGs but you can always search by file name.

Now, a legal note. All of these images were freely acquired over the internet under the reasonable assumption that they are in the public domain. I did not download any from pay-per-image web sites; those are usually watermarked anyway. So I am unaware of having violated any copyright law in acquiring them, using them for non-profit purposes, or sharing them here with my fellow community members.

P.S. - You may see a message like this. I live a clean virtual life, so I have confidence in what I upload or link to here. Still, it may be a good idea to run a quick virus check on any files that you download from this forum web site, mine or others. As you can see, though, this file has a "clean bill of health."

Copy "Units" folder from the archive to Graphics folder in your OOB main directory.

For example C:\Program Files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\Order of Battle World War II\Order of Battle - WW2_64_Data\Content\Graphics\Units.

Example how it looks in game: In game look.jpg

Enjoy :)

Alexizja: Very good work, and now it is like from night to day. Although I would direct all the photos to the right, it would be better this way in the UI.
Keep it up.

Forum moderator's note: This mod has been demonstrated to be authentic, and it works! Here is how to install it if you want to include only certain unit images:

Create a new folder called "Units" here:

Image0239.jpg

Drag (that is, extract from the zipped file) the desired image(s) here:

Image0240.jpg

The image appears in the game!

Screenshot 1.jpg

In order to work, there has to be an exact match of the file name to the game's unit name as shown in the units.csv file. If an image fails to appear properly, check this first.

Alexizja: One question. Have you been able to change the numbers from white to yellow?
In order to see the numbers in all the photos (many of them cannot be seen in white). When you can't buy the number it turns red and that looks good.

I updated Bru's Photos (link in post above) - I believe the number is now 580 images but I am losing count, and here is why: I finally got around to organizing them into various folders for easier reference and retrieval. The properties of the unzipped folder say it contains 580 files, but who knows. It's a lot, but now its a bit more organized.

I really like this pack - it adds flavour to the game, reminds me of good old Steel Panthers in a way... So thank you for compiling it:)

However I have just stumbled upon a mistake - Mitsubishi A5M4 is represented by a photo of a North American T-6 Texan converted to resemble Mitsubishi A6M (AKA "Zeke"/"Zero"/"Reisen"). .

Here you can see a disguised T-6 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URinojCqnWs (with a glimpse of the original Texan @1:40)
and here an A5M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDHEl-s2MNU (A5M4 variant @11:37)

The A5M4 visually closely resembled the A5M2 - with fixed strut gear and open canopy
