I don't play FOG, but would love to play the Pike and shot games.
Would it be possible for me to team up with Carpenkm as the English?

If there is an odd number I'd be happy to even it up.

Questions:

Is it possible to look at army lists in Pike & shot without setting up a multiplayer game?
What is the current end date for the P&S lists?
What will be the point limit/ map size on matches?

We'll fit you in Mark. I'm sure we can rustle up another player to even it out. Choose your region and lists, and either PM me or post them on the thread
  • You can go through the motions of creating a multiplayer skirmish then just bin it (on the left of your challenges screen)
  • I think the latest end date for some lists are around 1690's
  • Games are medium/ pot luck but can be changed on agreement with your opponent. you may want agricultural (as some terrain can create an undesirable game for both players)

Great idea Andre. PM carpenkm to see if he's amenable. I think TeamWest would benefit greatly from your advice and veteran status.

Is that the impression I gave? More like wines and beaches of the Algarve but call it "the lay of the land" if you want.

By the way don't worry about not being experienced in the games you could be playing me in FOG2, I have never played that PBEM.

Could someone help us with options for Venetian 800-1200 AD ?
In the 8th century, the Republic of Venice had pro-Frankish, pro-Byzantine, and pro-Lombard factions during the time of Byzantine decline. Charlemagne had designs on Venice, but failed to conquer it. As a result, Charlemagne recognized Venice as Byzantine territory. Over time, as the Byzantine declined, Venice obtained special privileges (such as exemption from trade tax) and became de-facto independent.
Therefore while the Kingdom of Italy based in Lombardy became part of the Holy Roman Empire, Venice was able to remain (de facto) independent.
I think using Byzantine would be fine
740's During the reign of Deusdedit, Venice became the only remaining Byzantine possession in the north 800's A Byzantine fleet sailed to Venice in 807 and deposed the Doge, replacing him with a Byzantine governor.
but unfortunately in the 1100's Venice was neutral in the Guelph;Ghibelline quarrel and not part of the HRE
Unlike the noble families, towns seldom had fixed party loyalties, although Milan, Florence, and Genoa were usually Guelph; Cremona, Pisa, and Arezzo were usually Ghibelline. Venice remained neutral.
Although, Venice remained neutral you could hypothesize that they supported either the Pope or the emperor as the republic of Venice was at war with itself.
The city of Zara rebelled against Venetian rule in 1183, placing itself under the dual protection of the Papacy and King Emeric of Hungary.

Hence, the rebel city of Zara could be regarded as a Guelph city (for the pope). And applying the "the enemy of your enemy is my friend" you could argue that the Republic of Venice being the city of Venice supported the Ghibellines (the holy roman emperor). But to my knowledge, neither Hungary or the Imperial army aided Venice.
Since there is no other option I'll allow Venice to use Italian Guelph or Ghibelline but not Imperial allies (as strictly speaking they were neutral and not part of the HRE. The other option is crusaders as they were given a free hand in the parts of the Levant.

that's fine by me. I would like to try to play some pike and shot friendlies to get the hang of the game.

I'll post my armies tomorrow - I will have to buy storm of arrows DLC to get full value for the 1200-1400 period!

Can i just ask would Roman allies be ok for the ancient British in the 1000 BC - 0AD period.

Romans in England are fine carpenkm. Any one us would be more than pleased to get you up to speed with P&S. Set up a challenge and post it. One of us will pick it up (I would suggest agricultural terrain). Also, you could also PM us or Andre (awsum4).

The poll is evening out. On reflection, the Ottoman empire is problematic as it covers such a large area and this area encompasses much of classical antiquity.
P.S Another player would make 5 aside...It would be nice to rustle up one more player.

Hi

I've been trying to purchase Storm of Arrows, but to no avail. I've got a query with tech support. My first three armies will be as below and i will post the 4th as soon as i can

1 - Ancient British with Roman allies
2 - British 600 - 1030 with Viking 790 - 899 Allies (just squeezes in!)
3 - English 1155 - 1271 with Scottish 1162 - 1319 allies

Hi All,

Back home in the North! My army choices, possibly slightly influenced by an excessive amount of Vinho Verde in the last week, are as follow:

1000 BC - 0 : Spanish Sertorius 80 -70 BC - (it was that or a cope out with Roman 105 BC - 25 BC although I think there are Roman legionaries in this Spanish list anyway)
0 - 800 AD : Visigothic 419 - 621 AD - with Byzantine 551 - 578 AD Allies

800 - 1200 AD : Andalusian 1050 -1154 AD
1200 - 1400 AD : Grenadine 1232 -1319 AD - with Berber (Marinid) 1244 -1319 AD Allies

1400 - 1550 AD: Spanish 1494 -1502 (Really difficult to choose in this period because by 1534 the Spanish have the massive and hugely expensive Veteran Early Tercios).
1550 - 1650 AD: Spanish 1649 -1688 - Is this OK? this is from Le Roi Soleil as in the Extra Nations v3 the Spanish list stops at 1599.

There is a somewhat "eastern" flavour to these "western" region armies which I have deliberately emphasised in the FOGM lists. Whether this attempt to "fight fire with fire" will have an effect on the battlefield I doubt, but it is a reflection of the history of Spain.
A glass of Rioja anyone?

Sorry Peter but I don't think your last army is acceptable. Armies are from extra nations. The date is so that the late period armies which are basically massed firepower muskets with bayonets are excluded, its unfair to pit them against pike and shot units. You've picked an army that is for the only last year of a period that covers 100 years.

But that's just my personal opinion, whatever Gavin rules is ok with me.

Actually now I look at the armies selected, there are 3 others that are later than the 1650 cut off period.
Are we allowed to choose armies from out of the periods?
