Karvon's Gauls defeated Murat's Spartans 60-40 for a score of 80-40.
Left flank was walled off by a river, narrowing room to maneuver. A small gentle hill fringed with a few trees lay on the far right flank about half way across the field. Short and to the left of the hill was a large marsh. To the left of that and a bit short of it lay a large patch of rough ground.
We brought a full contingent of 8 cavalry supported by 4 chariots with half a dozen of our Samnite allied foot. We had about half a dozen light foot to screen our mass of warbands. Our plan was to march our warbands to the hill with our Samnite allied foot covering the marsh and rough ground. Our mounted would start with a push on the right with a few held back in reserve to cover our left.
The Spartans had few Roman foot to support their pikes and spears and a handful of medium spears covering their flanks screened by a fair number of light foot. A couple of horse were in reserve. They were heavily deployed towards our left and clearly planned to contest control of the hill.
We sent our lights supported by some of our mounted in advance to seize the hill with our warbands force marched behind them. They bought us enough time for some of the warbands to seize the high ground barely ahead of the Romans, but got badly chewed up by the superior number of Spartan lights more closely supported by following foot. Our surviving horse was forced to fall back on the right by advancing Spartan heavy foot.
As our warbands had arrived a bit strung out due to their lack of maneuverability, the Spartans had a significant initial advantage in numbers as the battle was joined along the slopes. Spartan elan mostly successfully survived the fierce initial impact and a couple of warbands quickly lost heart leading to holes and flanking of the others. Our supporting horse managed to slow this down a little, but not by much. Most of our warbands were finally broken and driven from the hill, though we did grind down a number of Spartans in the process. Their flight was screened by a few of our mounted. We shifted generals in an attempt to rally some of the routers. This was fairly successful and we managed to eventually save 2-3 warbands.
In the meantime, our Samnites, supported by our horse and chariots, swept opposing foot out of the rough and marsh and turned the enemy right to support the surviving warbands around the hill. This finished off several of the worn out Spartans and they fled the field.
