Newbie's first Army (Seljuk Turks)

Post by JCgoose »

Hey

I'm building up my frist FoW army. having never played an Ancients game larger than DBA. I bought a Seljuk Turkish starter army and a copy of Swords and Scimitars but I've gotten pretty stuck trying to figure out what to do from there. I am tossing between the Sultanate of Rum and doing the Great Seljuk Empire. The only real difference is if I go Rum I get knight and spearmen. I am not too sure how the army goes as a whole having not been able to get any decent gaming time in with it yet.

The army its self has only a small BG of skirmishing bow men and seems to be all about light horse and Cav and I am worried that putting in slow moving inf will be a bit more of a burden than anything else. If someone can give me any light on what would be the best thing to added to and any tips on how to get the most out if it all I would be extremely chuffed.

Cheers

I have used the Seljik Turks quite a few times. They are the standard shooty cavalry army.
IMO i would'nt take infantry they would just slow you down also don't go for the Knight option at first try out the LH/Cav first.
ICRC spit the points 60 to 40 LH and Armoured Drilled Cavalry all in BG of 4 bases, take IC you'll be on Plus 4 if you win pick Steppes take Gully, Gentle Hill with brush on it another brush and lastly take broken. Take as your compulsery piece a double sized open space with the remainder of the terrain take the smallest size you can. Depending on enemy army if its another Steppes army don't flank march otherwise send at least one BG of Superior troops off with FC on a flank march. If facing shock mounted troops send your light horse in to pull them out of line keep the Cavalry back till you can get on the flanks of the spread out troops.
Last night I placed my Cavalry against armoured foot and shot them down and charged in and Fragged two so your Cavalry with a General can fight as well but try shooting enemy down first.
Shoot and evade thats the answer with this army. BTW enjoy yourself.

The only infantry you should be using are LF, and they can be Poor as it is the horse boys that do all the real work.

You will find a couple of Seljuq lists here - http://www.endoftime.pwp.blueyonder.co. ... mitars.htm

I've had a look over some the army lists supplied and tried a few sub battles with a friend and have beaten out a rough army list that seems to work for me.

Seljuk Turks 1071
IC
2xTC
4x4 Ghilman Cav, Sup Arm Bow Swds
3x6 Turcomans LH Av Unarm Bow Swds
1x4 Turcomans Cav Av Pro Bow Swds
1x4 Bed Lancers Cav Av Pro Lacners Swds
2x6 Foot Archers LF Av Bow
2x6 Foot Javelins LF Poor Jav LtSP

Still have yet to see how they work in a comp though...
If I ever get unsure of my plan I just think to myself...DENNY CRANE!
