Spanish Civil War question

Post by PoorOldSpike »

I haven't got the SCW DLC yet but in the meantime I'm creating scens in the Editor.
My understanding of the SCW is that it was Franco's Nationalists against the Republican commies, and Franco also had help from the Condor Legion.
Below are the 4 factions available in the editor, presumably the one called 'Spain' is Franco's Nationalists, and the one called 'Spanish Republic' is the Republicans, is that right?
But what exactly is the 'Communist Spain' faction?

Yes, Yes, and

The Communist fought on the Republican side, but were more interested in communist purity than defeating Franco.
In the last battle, Madrid, the Republicans and Communist turned on each other, as Franco moped up both.
There comes a time on every project when it is time to shoot the engineer and ship the damn thing.

I played DLS about the Civil War and although the general impression is positive, I was a little surprised by such historical inaccuracies as the possibility of capturing Gibraltar (and without any consequences) and the powerful support of Franco from Germany (tanks, first of all) already in July 1936 (in historical reality, this began only in October, before that assistance was only in the transportation of troops).

Republican too were more interested in republican purity than in defeating Franco (republicans prefer to let Zaragoza to nationalists than to anarchists, for fear they would have a "2nd barcelona"). The russian bolchevik party did just the same, it was a continuation of republican politic against power of people (true democracy).
In last battle of Madrid, it is anarchists again, Cipriano Mera, who had saved the town, against commie dictatorship this time.

It is not said that it was french republic who had helped the most Franco, as french Front Populaire, threatened the spanish republic if the Morocan french colony was lost for the CNT wanted to make here a "bourgeois" revolution (as morocan people revolution was ended by France) so Franco had no longer his Regulares legionaries, the more strategical tool of his army, more than german help...

I know zilch about the SCW, so would any of you mind explaining the different Infantry factions?
At a guess, I'd say that the 'Regulares' were the backbone/mainstay of the Nats, and the 'Brigade Mixta' were the backbone/mainstay of the Reps, is that right?
And did the Nats use their cavalry much?
Did the Regulares and Mixtas make up most of the troops in all the historical battles?
And how many of the other types such as 'Colonial Infantry' and 'International Brigade' were also involved in the battles?
Finally did many of the Communist faction take part in battles, and in what proportion compared to the other troops?

Wrong, I bet your nanny is very cross with you!
Look, if I surround the Nats, Reps and Commies with Thick forest in the top pic they're ALL out of supply.
But if I replace the Thick forest with swamps as in the bottom pic, they're all IN supply, proving all SCW infantry can trace a supply line across swamps.. :P
