You have my sympathies! Real life reason do seem to stop some players being able to play, but we are looking at ways that we can reduce this first round bump for people who are ready willing and able, but have drawn someone who can't be available.
FWIW, you'll not miss out on the points for the round, but I appreciate that it's the fun of the game that most of us are here for!
I agree with you, Shards ... let's not dramatize this problem since there are much more serious things in real life and a Tournament is after all just a game.
However, the minimum courtesy which I believe should be required of everyone in the regulations when registering would be to come forward to the designated partner at least once, say within the first 48 (or 72, or 96) hours of the Round. Whoever doesn't could then be removed from the list of participants and you would proceed, if possible, to another pairing.
This will not solve all cases, but could perhaps limit the number, which seems to reach between a quarter and a third of those registered.
But I will admit that it is not easy to manage and that you should also do it in your spare time.
So, I will remain confident and patient

Thank you for the clarification concerning the attribution of "BYE" points.
