Syracusans @ 800 points

Post by Mithras »

One of my opponents is working on a Later Carthaginian List. Threw something together based upon potential available opposition.

Syracusans @ 800 points

3 x TC @ 35 points each
2 x 4 Greek Cavalry (Armored Superior Drilled, Light Spear Swordsmen) @ 68 points each
1 x 6 Tarantine Cavalry (Unprotected Average Drilled, Javelin Light Spear) @ 42 points
1 x 6 Bodyguard Hoplites (Protected Superior Drilled, Offensive Spearmen) @ 60 points
2 x 8 Citizen Hoplites (Protected Average Drilled, Offensive Spearmen) @ 64 points each
2 x 8 Mercenary Hoplites (Protected Average Drilled, Offensive Spearmen) @ 64 points each
1 x 6 Mercenary Theureophoroi (Protected Average Drilled, Offensive Spearmen Medium Foot) @ 48 points
1 x 6 Italian Mercenaries (Protected Average Drilled, Light Spear Swordsmen Medium Foot) @ 42 points
1 x 6 Spanish Mercenaries (Protected Average Undrilled, Impact Foot Swordsmen Medium Foot) @ 42 points
2 x 6 Archers (Unprotected Average Drilled, Bow) @ 30 points

Total: 792 points

Seem workable?

I'd like to fit in Artillery, but I'm not sure how I can. Perhaps by dropping the Thureophoroi.

Hi,

I run Syracusans from time to time. In fact it's my longest standing army.

I like your list. It seems workable.

I would never take artillery outside of a scenario. I can't seem to find a way to work it, and now the 'ambushing with artillery' has been given the kibosh I feel even more limited. They are distructive, but totally unmovable so have to be sighted extremely well. If you took them they would only be useful on very rare occasions I believe.

At Can-Con 2009 I took Syracusans: Agathokles in Africa. The use of Numidian allies is exceptionally powerful, but it also liimits you in what you can take. Elephants and lots of worthwhile light-horse can make for an interesting combination.

Either way - as it stands, I think your list is very workable.

Ian -

Glad that it looks like it'll work. Seemed like a decent force with some solid options. Hoplites seem to be quite cost effective.

The Agathocles option is very tempting, but trying to do something "period appropriate" for my opponent(s). Still, I wouldn't mind having access to some of those goodies.

It's unfortunate about the Artillery being less than useful. Seems like this is a list that has a historical claim to it, moreso than others! Still, should be a formidable force even without the artillery.

It looks to be a solid HF list to me. You have decent support troops in the MF and mounted. Well worth a go.
