Description: Southwestern Slovakia - December 1944
Forces of the Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front are ready to cross Hron river - a natural barrier suitable for German defense of the area, and establish a bridgehead on the west bank of Hron by securing both bridges on the river Hron in Kalná and in Tekovský Hrádok. This action could allow Soviet forces to break-through the German defenses along the river and push quickly through Danubian lowland to Little Carpathian mountain range threatening Bratislava and Vienna from the southeast. German Forces led by Generalmajor Joseph Rintelen need to hold Soviets behind Hron river and destroy any Soviet attempt of establishing a bridgehead at all costs. Heavy fighting rages the whole Christmas week.

Operation Südwind 1945

Description: Southwestern Slovakia - February 1945
Forces of the Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front established a bridgehead after bloody battle of Komárno in January 1945. They are exhausted but have to hold the bridghead at all costs, because if they hold their positions this bridghead will allow them to attack quickly through Danubian lowland to Little Carpathian mountain range in order to capture Bratislava and Vienna from the southeast.
German forces launched the Operation Südwind in order to completely destroy the Soviet bridgehead between Danube and Hron river which is threatening German positions along the Danube. This area needs to be cleared of enemy units because OKW is planning another big attack operation at Balaton lake in Hungary, called Operation Frühligserwachen. To ensure safety of this operation, this bridgehead must be eliminated as well.
