Well, a large, sad difference between playing and playing computers (sad because there shouldn't be a difference, ideally) is that humans have more of the trick and tricked mindset. A computer normally has its set of commands, and difficulties are made by giving computer asrmies bonuses. This means taht using "underhand" methods of defeating your opponent (false set-ups, suprise units, etc...) don't work on a computer because it just doesn't care. A human will look at your skirmisher line and charge their cavlry at it, only to be killed by your heavy infantry.

quate from http://www.slitherine.com/eslitherine/f ... .php?t=871
########quate starts
2 Militia at 22/23
3 velites at 13
1 Hasti at 19
4 principii at 22, 23, 25, 26
3 triarii at 19, 20 and 20
4 auxilliary infantry at 8 - 11
4 legionaries at 9,9, 11 and 14
2 archers at 14
2 scouts at 13 & 14
1 nobles at 15
2 auxilliary cavalry at 16 and 17
All had had at least one armour upgrade and one of the Principii units had the enhanced standard which seemed to make them more or less invincible! My primary problem was I attempted to try and keep types to rough historical contexts, hence several units had little time to acquire levels of ability, etc, and became liabilities in difficult battles. I have suggested in another thread, and I still think it would be great if it could be carried through that there were some means of promoting units, e.g militia to auxilliary, principii to legionary, etc. Any chance Ian? However, as the segmenta style of armour is not widespread until c.100AD, principii work very well as late Republican, early imperial legionaries.
Quite unrelated - does the Celtic campaign seem much easier than the Roman? I am going through pretty well at very hard with only one game dropped to hard thus far, although admitedly I'm not very far in yet (I've just completed the sack of Rome).

Celtic Campaign Final Army
The army was planned from the beginning so purchase and development of units was purposely limited to a total of 20 units including the general. Almost the entire campaign was fought at very hard, although on 4 occassions where casualty limits were set I dropped to hard as I couldn't seem to achieve victory at the higher level. The last of these was the battle with the Batavian forces at the ford during the invasion of Britain.Generally however, I found the whole campaign far easier than the Roman campaign.
General Level 15 Weapons/helmet at 3
2 Militia 11, 13
2 Javelin units (sorry forgot to note their level, but about 13 I think)
2 archers 13, 11
4 warriors 15,14,11,11
3Veterans 18(+Ajax banner), 17, 16
1 Fanatics 13 (Weapons level 3, and only everused in non-disciplined formations)
2 Scouts 13, 14
3 Nobles 17(+Ajax Banner), 16, 14
Fame 414360
All units had enhanced weapons and armour at either levels 1 or 2 with the exceptions given above.

I'm a latecomer to this game, apparently, and just finished my first Roman campaign. I played the entire thing on hard, I didn't realize you could change dificulty between battles until reading this thread. I played one aborted campaign on normal, but after finding it nearly impossible to lose on normal I switched to hard. Most battles on hard I still won on the first attempt, but some took a retry or two. I took Possum's advice on training melee units, taking swordsman, feint, and drill every time they were offered. After recruiting core units I eventually maxed out weopons and armor on my auxiliary cavalry, with lesser equipment levels for other units. I ignored boots except for the principes, which seemed to move a bit slower than my legionaries and praetorians until I bought them two boot levels. Most units got a level or two of banners, as well as senior nco's, I hate seeing my veterans rout. I only bought the three special items listed; for the most part my troops did not advance high enough to be equipped with special items.
Final fame: 398,355
Final unit levels in purchase order:
Legate 53, Ajax Banner
Militia 29
Scout 22
Auxilia I 24
Auxiliary Cavalry I 25, Sarmatian Cavalry Armor
Auxilia II 23
Auxiliary Archers I 23
Principe 21
Auxiliary Cavalry II 22, Sarmatian Cavalry Armor
Legionary I 20
Auxiliary Archer II 21
Praetorian I 21
Praetorian II 19
Auxiliary Archer III 17
Auxiliary Archer IV 16
Legionary II 15
I find it odd that my legate advanced so much higher than in the other armies posted here. It seemed natural to me to always throw my legate into the biggest brawl on the map so his leader bonus could help the hardest fighting units. Do other players hold their legate back? Perhaps legate experience was tweaked in the patch?

finished Brit Mod campaign at Hard level
in recruitment order never disbanded units
Legate 20
Auxilia 16
Velites 15
Militia 18
Fanatics 16
Fanatics 16
Militia 13
Archer 14
Archer 14
Noble 18 with miracle horse armour
Noble 15
Fanatics 6
Warriors 5
Noble 5
Fame 159955
Veterans are somewhat better armoured and stout unit, but I prefer to use Fanatics.
And as they are thin armoured, in every battle there are around 50 to 60 losses.
Nobles with good thick armour is really good at trampling and shattering enemy heavy infantries.
In latter part of campaign, the hardest battle is Rubicon river, where two lv.17 archer units make rain of arrows.

Most troops had lvl 3 upgrades cept for my missle units wwhich I mostly upgraded only with ranged upgrades and boots, cept the Velites and Skirmishers which had various lvls of upgrades, the Velites were in full lvl 3+ gear. FInished all scenarios at very hard. I found that having a lot of heavy infantry while tough to develop was easier in general although being light on cavalry was a pain. A plethora of Missle units made up for that some though, I won several scenaios with my archers as the last units standing.
I got even heavier with archers on the Britannia Campaign as I found developing front line units to be very difficult by the mid game and had adopted a policy of equipping all units. Might try again with a little lighter equipping.

Here's my army after the Roman campaign. The game just got too easy after the first couple times through so I wanted to challenge myself.
Setting: Very Hard
Final Fame: 1137155
Legate: 104 *****GET YOUR LEGATE TO LEVEL 100 FOR SOME GREAT GOODIES...!!! (I wonder if Slitherine knows about this)*****
Auxiliary Cavalry I: 33
Auxilia I: 36 (If you want to see the full potential of the Auxilias, get them to high levels and they will amaze you!)
Auxilia II: 34
Auxilia III: 36
Auxiliary Cavalry II: 32
Here's my army after the Mithras campaign. Wow, what a great challenge this add-on was! Worth all my pennies. I had to replay a couple of scenarios A LOT of times to win, but when I did, was it ever satisfying!

Praetorian I: 22 (just couldn't do it without a heavy infantry unit. In hindsight, Legionaries would have been a better choice I think)
Auxiliary Archers I: 2 (this was the missing piece for me to beat the last scenario after about a thousand tries. Only used them for this last battle and they took out jusssst enough enemies)

I am not sure what you mean by DUMBO. But you can get any unit in any roster simply by editing the Squads File in the Data directory. There you will find evey unit and even the Ghost , Shadow and Demon units. If you want to use any unit in there you simply add or change the MadeBy statement to whatever you are using. If you want the Gauls to have Elephants you simply add the MadeBy Gaul statement to the file.

It's a reference to an old joke, Thorwald.thorwald wrote:I am not sure what you mean by DUMBO. But you can get any unit in any roster simply by editing the Squads File in the Data directory. I posted this pic months ago, showing an amusing visual bug in the editor

The editor has its quirks, but it's not all that bad. The quirks are all fairly consistent and one can learn the needed work-arounds in little time. I was glad to have the editor, and enjoyed messing around with itiainmcneil wrote:The "XP me" button is only part of the editor and once you start editing its possible to set up data that can crash teh game. That's one of the reasons we didn't release it.
We're hoping to have something more robust for the future

There are many things not yet tested about modding, and editor helps me a lot.
There are chances I can change distances between troops in some formations, which affects very to the trample outcome, I guess.
And elephants in tight formation is juggernaut.
I currently don't know how to save scenario files, and Isle war is very interesting to play, so it will take some time to get around and
be accostomed to it.

Well, bro, the thing is, you really can't create a new scenario from scratch. What you have to do is make your mod directory and all, and then edit an existing scenario.tora_tora_tora wrote:There are many things not yet tested about modding, and editor helps me a lot.
