Weekly round-up
Nothing to report yet in Division A, but in Division B TaBai (Mongol Ilkhanid) has gone to the top with 2 wins, including what might turn out to be an important triumph against oscarius (Anglo-Irish). Nothing either in Division C, but Divisions D and E have been very busy. Lynx57 (German) leads Division B, despite having 2 defeats already, and he is being chased by CaptainPunka (also German) and Kerait (Ghurid) who have both started with 2 straight wins. In Division E Rosedelio (Ghurid) has made another impressive start to the season and has 5 wins under his belt already. wzfcns (Hungarian) is in second place and both Fysh (German) and Quivis (also German) have started with wins.

A narrow battlefield allowed both armies to pick their best melee troops and march forward with flanks relatively protected. So Varangian guard and Dismounted Knights formed up against Veteran Spearmen in a bloody duel to the death.

Division D

Kerait (Arab Conquest) defeats rpadilla1988 (Byzantine) 61-49

Arab prospects looked poor at the outset.

Due to the sheer incompetence of the Arab commander, the Arab veteran foot began the battle out of position. With the Muslim infantry still struggling to form a coherent line and advance, the encroaching Byzantine cavalry (including the mighty Klibanophoroi) caught the Bedouin horse painfully isolated and started cutting them down.

However, when the veteran Arab spearmen did finally meet the Skoutatoi in the melee, they more than compensated for the command's initial tactical debacle by rapidly smashing the Greek lines to smithereens. Only the fierce Varangians withstood the experienced the Arab fighters, going down about as easily as Leonidas at Thermopylae.

The annihilation of the Roman infantry allowed the Arab infantry to confront the enemy cavalry. With the majority of the Byzantine army destroyed, the Arabs edged out a close victory.

Losses on both sides were appalling. No doubt this engagement did not lead to any satisfactory conclusion to the ongoing Anatolian war of attrition. Good game to rpadilla!

The map had a good zone for Hannibal to operate in and the numerous skirmish troops forced Rome to attack early and unsupported. They paid the price but fought hard and destroyed some of Hannibals precious Elephants. Well played gfs26 and many thanks for the game. I am now out of active opponents in this part of the DL so will issue some challenges on Monday.
