Naming Units

Post by Thunderhog »

To my knowledge the units that you have in games are separated as individual companies, unless it's an individual entity like the Railguns or other machines. What would be good naming conventions for the units in the core force? I've recently restarted my Axis Operations and want to have a name for each unit.

I disagree. First of all, before I comment on what I use/think they are, it is impossible for them all to represent any particular one size of unit. Bridging engineers, for instance, were less than company sized units called "columns." So there is no one-size-fits-all answer or unit.

That being said, I prefer to consider (and name) most units in game battalions (German: bataillon or abteilungen). Engineers were battalions too, but Wehr Infantry and Grenadiers in game I name regiments because you will otherwise have far too many of them for game play. I also like organizing and naming my units by historical divisions and their constituent parts.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I assumed it was down to either company or battalion level.

No problem. This has been greatly discussed multiple times before in other threads and going back to its predecessors like PG/PG2/PC1. Most I think would agree with either battalion or regiment strength for the vast majority of game units. The deeper you dive into it, the more convoluted it becomes. For example, it brings up the issue of map/hex sizes. So if they were all company sized, or even battalion sized for that matter, how big was your army that just took Stalingrad? So yeah, you have to give a lot of leeway in exchange for game functionality. Once you accept that, pick whatever you want that makes it fun for you. You're playing a game, not filming a historical documentary.

A good website that I like to use to find out historical unit composition is here: https://www.axishistory.com/

Cheers!
