Moving Commanders

Post by richafricanus »

Two questions re moving commanders:

1. To join a battle group they have to line up with an element of that BG. However since they don't need to wheel or turn (p.49) does this mean if they can just reach the BG with any edge of their base they can then be moved into position to line up with an element in that BG, or do they have to measure the move like the old single element moves in DBM?

2. To move into the front rank of a BG in either melee or impact phase I assume the commander must be joined to the battle group? He (or she  ) I assume can't move from one BG to fight in the front rank of another except during movement or JAP phases? Wishful thinking I reckon but if you don't ask...

Completely off the topic, I'm new to this forum and I see I am classified as a Peasant - now how does that work?

Facing of commanders doesn't matter, they can mough through friendly BGs but not through enemy. You have to move to a lined up possition so you bave to be in edge and corner contact to join the BG, there is no free move to line up.

Once a commander is fighting in the front rank they cannot leave that BG until it is no longer in close combat (actually slightly more complex than that but... ) see P50 for full details.

Hi Richard, you will alas remain a peasant until you have made IIRC 10 posts at which point you will be 'promoted'.

Hope my answers have been of some help.

Yes I get this bit. My question is about when I want to first join a BG to fight in the front rank. Do I have to be joined to it or can I be within 7 MU's and move to the front rank during melee or impact phase?

Actually, from the way I use my peasants (safely nestled deep in the rear) being 'promoted' closer to combat status may not be such a cause for celebration

It has been often stated that being promoted to a general in one of my armies is in no way a reward.

I did only lose 2 generals at the IWF so perhaps they are getting better.

The general would have to be with the BG to join the front rank in the impact phase as only charging BG's move then. In the movement phase or JAP he could join the BG and then declare himself in front rank in the next melee phase.

Yes, the more annoying and obnoxious you are, the higher rank you become. So you see someone like me (Hastatii) and you realise 'he's just an annoying bugger :!: "

Well Ian, I'll find out what an annoying bugger you are when when I see you next month in Oz for that Hattin game with the other South African, Anton.

Ahh, you're that Richard! I should have guessed.

Well, at least if you do find me obnoxious I'll not be able to understand your complaints about me until you get back and type it :)

Actually Ian, you will find there are more variations of South African English than there books of army lists in FOG (and that's saying something!). My accent and Anton's are very different (and of course mine is better).

Yes, more cultured I'm sure.

No, hang on a minute, isn't it going to be Anton on MY side... what are you trying to do here... get me in trouble with my erstwhile ally?

Actually, I was thinking about the game... go to private - I'll send an e-mail.
