Obeserver and Spotter

Post by charge62 »

The question of phased movement for observer aircraft has a solution that does not break the observer mechanic.

Conceptually, the game uses one AC for two different roles, real time observation / fire correction versus general recon.

Real time correction required an AC fitted with radio and pilots or crew who were skilled enough to differentiate friend from foe and call in pertinent information before it was too old to use.

Reconnaissance missions could be as simple as a pilot flying over an area and sketching on a map on his lap or more technically demanding like photo recon flights. These missions might be time critical to the commander, but they were not real time.

For players who turn on unlimited Undo, the issue is of little importance. But for those using Fear of the Unknown commander trait or very limited Undo a genuine recon aircraft can be valuable.

The attached link contains a revised Units file that splits the two missions, using the same aircraft model. The existing observer AC is preserved. I've added a copy of the aircraft denoted by a following asterisk/star attached to the unit type name. This clone loses the recon ability (observer) and picks up phased movement.

For example, in the SCW DLC the player will see both the "He 70 Rayo" (observer) and "He 70 Rayo *" (general recon) variants available for purchase.

Nice idea!

My solution is a bit different:
I assigned double move to all recon planes.
This make these units more flexible, but not too effective.

PS: I don’t use undo for cheating.

I have chosen the Fear of the Unknown trait too and my solution is (when and if I get these 2 Heroes): use both double move and fast rebase, where fast rebase give me a good overview of the map, when travel from base to base.

@peterw: How do you assign double move to all recon planes?

In Units.csv I added „DoubleMove“ for all the relevant units.

Example:
Fi156Storch,"NSLOCTEXT('units','Fi156Storch','Fi 156 Storch')","NSLOCTEXT('units','Fi156Storch_full','Fieseler Fi 156 Storch')",TacticalBomber,Air,Air,0,TRUE,FALSE,0,TRUE,FALSE,0,TRUE,FALSE,0,TRUE,FALSE,8,5,0,10,0,4,0,130,0,0,"(ReconPlane,DoubleMove)",FieslerStorch,(DE),Carrier,70,1,01.01.1937 - 01.06.1944,
