Aetius39 (Gauls) defeats TomoeGozen (Romans) 50-20
A stream with low hills separated the armies, and each right flank's deployment extended beyond the other armies' left. Coincidently that right flank did well for each side, and both left sides were hurting badly. The Gauls managed to get a few of their cavalry around the back of the Romans, and along with a few cohesion gains managed to rout the Romans. But they were stubborn, and many Roman units had to be auto-broke to rout. Tough game that was much closer than the score shows. GG to my opponent!^^
Team 8 Aetius39 - 90 points
Team 1 TomoeGozen - 20 points

An epic battle which went to the last but one turn. After some manoeuvring the Gauls game down from their hill and tried to occupy the Roman Infantry while the Gallic Cavalry ganged up on the poor Roman Cavalry which was only there trying to look pretty and wasnt overly keen on any thing which might get their uniforms dirty. In contrast the Roman Infantry was up for up for a damn good punch. The veterans in particular fought themselves into the ground - standing strong for turn after turn against those nasty uncivilised Gauls. A bit of luck for the Raw legions who were obviously inspired by their veteran mates and a lot of running around trying to keep the Gallic Cav from hitting the flanks led eventually to a Roman win, although there werent many of us left to go about bringing Roman Culture to Gaul.
Thanks for a really enjoyable game and good chat. With different luck the result could have been very different.

Re: There Can Be Only One II! - Round 3!
Team 6 Karvon (Gauls) defeated Team 5 Giacofa93 (Romans) 47-18
A large series of forests masked the Gallic right A large patch of rough area extended from the left of the trees, further shielding the flank. There were large amount of woods strewn along the Roman side of the field, but these would play no significant role in the battle.
We opted for force split between 8 cavalry, 8 close order warbands and 8 loose order warbands. In addition we had half a dozen light foot and a couple of masses of camp followers. We initially deployed our loose order warbands deep in the woods on our right screened by a pair of skirmishers. Our close order warbands we deployed behind the rough ground to the left of the woods. Most of our cavalry we deployed deep on our left flank. A pair of cavalry and the camp followers were deployed behind the woods on the right. We expected the Romans to focus their initial advance in the center or our left, avoiding the woods, and focusing on our cavalry and close order warbands.
The Romans were initially a bit dispersed in deployment. A few legionaries were deployed on their right, a number in the center and a few on their left. Most of their cavalry were deployed on their left, screened by a few light foot opposite the forests. A couple of medium foot and light foot supported the center. A pair of light horse were on either wing. The Romans began their advance shifting forces towards the woods on my right. Their cavalry and light horse probed aggressively, uncovering my screening skirmishers and pushing on through narrow meadows between the trees, testing my right flank.
I immediately began a shift of my infantry to the right. My close order warbands slowly began marching behind the woods to fill in the gaps between trees. One of my loose order warbands pushed across the meadows and into the trees beyond to secure my right flank. My cavalry and camp followers, supported by a light foot or two countered the Roman light horse scouts and drove them off the field eventually. My other loose order warbands held back in the woods on the right, hoping the Romans would be drawn in by the screening skirmishers. On the left, my cavalry began a move to the far left to draw off or flank the Roman foot and token horse opposing them.
The Romans responded very effectively against my cavalry wing; their light horse supported by a cavalry and a couple of legionaries drove my wing further left than I had planned and managed to whittle down and destroy several of them. The Romans attacked my skirmishers on the edge of the woods with legionaries and cavalry. I moved up some warbands to support and the legions attacked these as well, beginning a protracted melee extending along the front and left side of the forest. In the meantime, legionaries and cavalry attempted to force their way through the meadow on the right side of the forest defended by several of my warbands, resulting in another protracted melee.
Another pair of legionaries, attempted to work their way around the left flank of the forest and ran into a pair of my warbands guarding that flank.
On my right, the cavalry and camp followers who'd chased off the light horse, worked their way through the far right woods and turned the flank on the battle raging in the meadow. In the central woods fight, several Roman units finally broke, leading to a domino of breaks as the warbands pursued. On my left, my cavalry remnants returned to fall on the flanks or rears of several more units, leading to the final collapse of the Roman army.

Darn! But at least we'll be able to skim off some of that urine tax, or at least the urine itself...
Anyway, many thanks for yet another fun tournament! I wonder what the next theme for TCBOO will be: any thoughts?

Re: There Can Be Only One II! - Round 3!
Round 4 - Crassus' invasion of Parthia - Carrhae
After Caesar conquers Gaul, Crassus feels he must do something glorious to stay atop with his two fellow Triumvirs. He decides to go for it all: he will invade and conqueror Parthia. This will bring him fame and fortune far surpassing either Pompey or Caesar. He just needs to drive off a few horsemen...
Armies: Roman 105-25 BC vs. Parthian 250 BC-225 AD
Team 2 vs. Team 5
Ironclad (Romans) vs. tyronec (Parthian)
Giacofa93 (Romans) vs. deeter (Parthians)
Team 8 vs. Team 6
carpenkm (Romans) vs. Karvon (Parthians)
SawyerK (Romans) vs. Aetius (Parthians)
The above teams are fighting each other Round 4. Please talk to your partner and decide which army each of you will take, and then pm me your choice. Only 1 person from the team has to pm me. As soon as both teams matched against each other send me their choices, I will post them and you can start the battle!
When ready to play, the player using the Parthian army sets up the game:
Large/Wide (1600)
Map is desert
Open battle
No allies for either side.
There is no re-rolling of the map.
Please post your challenges here so I can make sure everything is going smoothly.
*****Winners always post the battle results and points like this please:
Kronenblatt defeats Aetius39 45-17
Kronenblatt 60 + 28 = 88 total points
Aetius = 17 total points

Re: There Can Be Only One II! - Round 3!
Let me know if this is too far-fetched.
I thought that now that we are at the "semifinal" round, if one of the two matches ends before the other, knowing the result could be an advantage for the other competitors. For example, they could be influrenced in their strategic choices by knowing that they need only X points to be safe.
Would it make sense to share publicly the results of the matches only when all 4 of them are finished?
And please keep in mind that I might just be speculating on nothing, and I absolutely don't doubt anyone's good faith

Hi, I don't think this will be a problem; last TCBOO went ok and I'm guessing this will be the same. There is a low chance of it happening, I think, mostly due to low chance of being possible due to dependence on terrain and the fact that most likely you'd have to know the first game's score early on if not at the very beginning to plan that strategy.Giacofa93 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 6:00 pm Let me know if this is too far-fetched.

The Romans are tough, but can only take so many arrows, as Crassus found out. GG and much tougher play than score suggests!
Aetius - 60 + 30 = 90 points
SawyerK - 13 points
