Order of Battle Would be Awesome in WWI Setting

Post by Romavatandasi »

Fortification system, effectiveness of artillery, uneffectiveness cavalry, recon system, when you think about that, order of battle would be awesome WWI game, I just thought that when I play Soviet-Japan fight, this game can take place at Soviet uprising, Turkish war of independence and before that, maybe d-day, if urban warfare can be upgraded, fall of berlin.

Base game is indeed awesome and quite unrivaled, from balkan wars to syrian civil war, this game has great potential because it is casual game with easy learning curve also fun to play.

Don't ask me why I make this post, I just love this game and played after long time Turkish lang fix.

WWI bro ? I'm sleepy when trying to think how i play Western front in 1914 and 1915. Just infantries blob + arty pieces because there's no tanks and full of 10-digged units around. Aircrafts is mostly designed for recon, and the way they fight each others looked more like a showcase because you have no "real" bomber to make any serious reasons to dominate sky.
Slowly, indeed, super slowly advancing, you will need tons of time just to kill infantry just by infantry or just leave them scattered to see your supply line beeing cut off. What if you try to circle them without tanks ? You go to enemy arty range and go out of our arty's cover. Without tanks, no decision breakthrought would be done.

The game should be from Spain civil war to Korean war.

WW I naval would be fun. WW I air warfare would be about the same. Trench warfare, not so much.

Some materials from the First World War were still used during the Second World War.

I actually agree it could work well in a WWI setting.

If large-scale trench warfare would be everybody's cup of tea is another question, but the early stage wasn't that way, and later you have all the interesting developments like aerial warfare, early tanks etc, plus some naval warfare, naval landings (Gallipoli) etc. to spice it up IMO.

The main prob is the production effort and time needed, it would require much more than a usual DLC to have few WWI related features (trenches) and a satisfying amount of units, even when we can reuse some of the artillery (indeed a number of guns we have are from WWI times).

You could have really fun scenarios during the 1914 and 1918 offensives, there might be an interesting way to do some of the major western battles inbetween as well like verdun. The eastern front and middle eastern front would also be fun to play as it was a little more wide open.

An alternative logo txt could be The Great War.

BTW, I just checked John Tiller Games. They have released 3 WW1 1914-campaigns (Serbia, France, East-Prussia) with a number of scenarios. Other than (a lot of...-) new units and maybe some new terrain, specialisations etc there should at least be no problem creating enough content.

"The Great War" sounds better.

With some kind of victorian decorations on logo ?

The eastern front was substantially more mobile, with the development of shturm tactics for the Brusilov offensive during the winter of 1915 leading to a restoration of mobility by the Russians in 1916. The subsequent collapse of the state and complete loss of morale/discipline/control put paid to any serious repeat. But then there's also the absolutely fascinating and highly mobile conflict that erupts between basically everyone in Eastern Europe in 1919-1922 to cover. Armored trains, air attack, cavalry, mechanized units and the like were major parts of the fighting during this period.

The fighting in the Caucuses between Russia and Turkey was also fascinating, with lots of raiding and mountain warfare. And the fighting in Egypt and Arabia between Turkey and the UK/ANZAC is of course fairly legendary.

A neat additional element about this period is the need to cover topics like infectious disease -- which ravaged many of the forces in the east -- and morale and discipline at the tactical/operational level where OOB takes place as they were major factors in a period not as far removed as you might think from the days of Napoleon where medicine was concerned.

The downside is I think it's quite tough to represent both the dominance of defensive systems protected by artillery (and the sheer overwhelming power of artillery) alongside the incredible effectiveness of shturm tactics for breaching those same systems. Maybe counterfire with artillery alongside special, limited and elite units that do not trigger counterfire?

But I do think you could do a neat interwar and eastern front of WW1 game thematically even if it doesn't entirely capture the reality.

exactly.

the eastern front was pretty dynamic until the russian surrender and e.g. hungary had quite a hard time against the surrounding attacking newly formed nations especially the massively beefed up romanian army that basically occupied whole present day hungary until the french order them to stand down. the collapse of the austro-hungarian "empire" was actually one of the biggest geopolitical events of the 20th century, i would say top 20 even 10. it is really spectacular how they managed to write themselves out of history for centuries back in the days.

WWI fractured four empires, and remade the map of Europe into (mostly) the modern one. It's a somewhat overlooked conflict, I think, due to it not at all being the "War to End All Wars."

I think OOB would need a lot of changes to properly model that conflict. Some of the features could be used for an entirely new game, if Slitherine is looking for new ways to get my money.

To End All Wars in a good WWI game, although at a much bigger scale than OOB.

It would be very very easy to make a WW1 mod. After all, models are just as good without touching them, and the underlying mechanics are already there.

I think the early infantry and artillery (and probably naval) models are usable as is. But it would nice to have more more correct air and tank units.

Which models exactly? You have to be kidding when you think that WWII setting models are gonna work with WWI ones.

I am not sure about artillery and naval models, but with infantry it's not gonna work just like that. WW2 uniforms are not hard to tell from WW1 ones. I am not even mentioning weapons. Without any design tweaks it would just be lazy asset copy-pasting.

These OOB unit types were built before or during WW1. A proper WW1-edition would require a lot of work, of course. But there are interesting maneuver battles on both the west and east front in 1914 before the trench war set in.

75mm Krupp M1908
75mm Modèle 1897
75mm mle 1897
76mm M1902
155mm Modèle 1917
155mm m1917
A couple of these types look similar, but are not identical. Odd...
