Division C
Captainwaltersavage - German Imperial 1200-1319 AD defeats edb1815 - Italian (Ghibelline) 1200-1319 AD with German (Imperial) 1200-1319 AD allies 56:28
A very challenging battle to finish on. The battlefield was dominated by a very wide low hill in the centre of the battlefield sprinkled with woods and rough. The Italians had another hill on the baseline and a marsh on their right flank. There was so much terrain I brought lots of Brigans, archers and crossbows and even a couple of light archers. In the event the Italians set up well back on their baseline and I was able to take the centre, the only resistance being from some light archers. The problem then was that I had relatively few heavy troops to advance beyond it and the Italians had lots of knights and heavy spears. Fortunately for me the Italians noted the weakness of my left flank and left centre and after some redeploying of their lines came at me in large numbers. Italians crossbows that had been hidden in the marsh advance to shoot my raw crossbows and Brigans to pieces. I had to dance around with mounted crossbows and my cheap troops to give the lone unit of foot knights and two mounted knights a chance to inflict some damage. The centre held (just) but then the rain of crossbow bolts and arrows managed to degrade the Italian knights enough to give me some breaks. Eventually my right flank cavalry arrived and smashed into the enemy centre. They took some losses but dished out a lot more pain than they took; managing to swing into the centre battle and the knights had a jolly time charging everything in sight. A very balanced fight, as at the end I had three fragmented units and four disrupted vs the Italians 2 fragmented and 1 disrupted. The prize goes to the foot knights who did not miss a step in this battle and all of them were still going strong at the end of the battle. Special mention goes to the unit of disrupted raw crossbows who flank charged some Italian spears who had penetrated my centre line. They just popped out of the woods and smashed them to pieces.
