Anyone Else in the UK Being Charged in USD

I live in the UK. Slitherine is a UK company, based not far from where I live.

I've just ordered a game, advertised in GBP, the checkout gave a price in GBP but when I selected PayPal, the price was put through in USD even though my PayPal account is in GBP.

This must be a Slitherine thing, not a PayPal one because every other PayPal purchase I make works fine in GBP - it must be that Slitherine requested the price in USD.

This is crazy, so I'm going to get ripped off with totally unnecessary currency conversion and handling fees.

Not happy at all, why on earth would Slitherine do that?

How do you get in contact with Slitherine?

I've spoken to PayPal and they say this is nothing to do with them - Slitherine chose to request payment in USD for some reason.

I will need to speak to Slitherine because this is not that simple to resolve - they can't simply reverse the transaction because charges will already have been incurred with my credit card provider - so Slitherine has created a mess involving three companies - so this is something that will need to be discussed with them - and eMails back and forth won't cut it.

I live in the UK (about 20 miles from Slitherine).
Slitherine are in the UK.
Slitherine are a UK company (Slitherine UK Limited).
The product was advertised in GBP.
The basket total was shown in GBP.
The checkout total was shown in GBP.
My PayPal default currency is GBP.
My credit card associated with my PayPal account is GBP.

So why on earth did Slitherine put the request through to PayPal in US Dollars?

I've already spoken to PayPal and they say it is nothing to do with them - they state that Slitherine requested payment in USD

This is going to leave me out of pocket as a result of unnecessary currency conversion and handling fees.

How do we sort this out?

I know from experience you can't simply refund the USD payment and redo in GBP, because I will end up with exchange fees in both directions - done that before, got the t-shirt.

The only thing I can think of is for me to wait and see what the total charge including fees is to my credit card in GBP, compare that with the product price in GBP and you refund the difference in GBP.

UPDATE

Currently on the phone with PayPal.

They have advised me that Slitherine's PayPal account is already under investigation and have advised me to contact Action Fraud.

Clearly that is silly but I do want to get this resolved.

Oh you took the time to merge my posts - would be nice if you could expend the time to address my concern.

Just to let you know that a dispute has now been raised with PayPal.

PayPal have advised me that the cause is that Slitherine only have US dollars set up on their PayPal account - fine for international sellers but they should really warn or prevent UK customers from using that payment method.

Please be aware that PayPal set the dispute type to 'goods not received'. I informed them that this wasn't the case, my issue is with the currency that was used, but PayPal said they understood but that they had a limited set of dispute types to choose from.

All I want is to not be out of pocket - the checkout stated a price in GBP and I should be charged that and not more because of unnecessary currency exchange and handling fees.
