Battle of Knockdoe 1504 scenario

Post by Paul59 »

My Battle of Knockdoe scenario is now available for download. This is a small battle from Irish history, well, a big battle by Irish standards! I originally designed this scenario about a year ago, but never released it. I have recently upgraded it, adding the Irish unit graphics from the Extra Nations Campaign mod and I found appropriate flags for the two sides, amongst many other small changes.

Nothing grand, compared to my Nine Years War and Great Northern War scenarios, but I hope you enjoy it.

Cheers

Great Little Scenario. Those Galloglaigh have a very powerful attack. Kildare's Cavalry like to evade a lot. The low wall and those bill-men look intimidating until one manages to get in behind them.

That is a really nice article, the pictures of axes shows what the fighters were wielding, and Knockdoe is from the irish “cnoc tuagh”, literally “the hill of axes”.

I don't understand how this scenario can be won. It seems that almost all self-made scenario in this game are made in such way a player will lose every time. Firstly a player has take the side that lost in the real life, then the forces of this losing side are made less than they were in the historical battle.

In this scenario you play as Ulick Burke's army, which according to my sources was 4000 men strong. In this scenario it has around 6700 men, so it actually has far more than the reported historical figure!

Given that most players are far superior to the AI, it is natural that most scenarios are played from the historically losing side. It will give a greater challenge.

It was 6 years ago that I originally designed this scenario, so my memory of it is rather vague, but I am sure that I would have won this battle while testing it. I was already a good player (Lieutenant Genaral level) when I designed this scenario, but very new to scenario design. I probably designed the scenario to be a good challenge to other players of my ability. I obviously did not know how to vary the strength multiplier to give more historically accurate army numbers, and I did not know how to make the scenario easier for the lower levels of difficulty. I have learned all these skills since then. I apologise for my inexperience of 6 years ago.

Just played through on Sergeant Major, beat it on turn 8. I sent two light horse off to the right wing, and split my kerns between the two flanks. I advanced 3 infantry on the left but kept them out of bow shot, and kept the rest stationary. When the enemy cavalry moved in, I faced them with my foot and pelted them with javelins until they disrupted, then charged them after blocking their retreat. On the left, I did a mix of charging the enemy foot that came out, and skirmishing if I could throw javelins from the side or flanks. At that point I advanced against the longbowmen, charging the ones on the enemy's left which were unprotected by the wall, and crossing the wall on the other side to prepare to charge. At that point, the scenario ended as I was up 43-11.

Could you please record all the battle? I just want to get how to do all this. I'd appreciate it very much.

So I play this pretty casually and make a couple of minor mistakes, but stick to the plan outlined above. I'm sure there are other ways to win the scenario - the most obvious that occurs to me is pushing hard on the left, with all 3 light cav, maybe 4-5 kerns and 4 infantry, working around the wall and charging in, all while holding out on the right.
