Zealots name not proper in Jewish list 167 BCE -111 BCE

Post by melm »

I suggest it change the unit "Zealots" as it is a specific name for the political group in the 1st century CE and it is certain that they did not exist during the Seleucid rule. We can change the name to "Maccabees". Otherwise it is hard to explain why "Zealots" disappeared during the Hasmonaean dynasty and then reappeared later on.

The Zealots as a political force existed in the 1st century CE but the Maccabees are regarded as zealots themselves because of their fanaticism, viciousness and zealotry. Whether they could be called Maccabees in FoG 2 is something for discussion.

"In the end, the Maccabees must be judged to be both liberators and zealots. Like many figures in the Bible, these apocryphal heroes are multi-layered, and their meaning is unraveled by successive generations based on their own needs and experiences."

You are, of course, strictly correct, as we were well aware, but we don't want to have duplicate units with just the name different over such a fine point of nomenclature. The number of spaces in the squads file is limited.

So they are not strictly "Zealots" with a capital "Z" in the first period, but they are "zealots" with a small "z" as per the normal English meaning of the word, rather than the historical name of the faction of the same name.
