Message in Guadalcanal scenario

Post by ulfSjolinder »

Then I try to move land units sometimes get ”Hold the line” message. But sometimes i can get the message if i try to move towards the airfield, sometimes i can move to an area that was not allowed before and so on. I cant understand the rule what is allowed or not? Anyone knows?

Thanks, Ulf

The designer is doing you a favor with this message. If you move two or more U.S. land units beyond the defense perimeter (red line), as measured by a number of hexes from each of the target hexes (green ovals), he is telling you that "We do not have enough forces to go on the offense against Japanese bases on the island. Our objective is to hold the defensive perimeter around Henderson Airfield until High Command delivers us more reinforcements!":

So for example, if you move within 15 hexes of Point A (on the lower left, about 15 hexes from the perimeter), it activates the warning message:

and turns the other two triggers off so that you don't get the message again:

Therefore, whether you get the message, if you do get it at all (you will not if your troops stay within the perimeter), depends on when and where you move your units.

The designer is doing this so that you are prepared for expected Japanese counterattacks.

***** SPOILER ALERT *****

At Turn 35, when you are supposed to go on the offensive:

this trigger turns off those Defensive Perimeter messages that you saw above so that if you did not see the warning message before, you will not see it now as your forces spread out to clear the island:

Heh, I triggered that message because I counter attacked with an encircling move by shifting the marine defences on the East river to the south and west to pocket the western offensive. You have to go along the road to the river bridge, and that's just outside the red line as you can see in the picture. :D
