A big thumbs up and a small complaint

Post by Butchbird »

First off, I want to say how much I love your products and how refreshing it is in this day and age of constantly having less customer support and less contact with developpers in general to have the very makers of the games take their time to excange with the players on trougleshooting issues and what not.

Do take into consideration this is coming from a guy whom, untill last year, had not bought a computer game since 2004 (and a computer since 2001). Coming back into computer gaming, I planned on playing all those paradox interactive games I'd always wanted to try (europa and victoria notably). But when I discovered fields of glory II, my plans changed and I was delighted to discover all your other products...admitebly I don't have enough free time to play anything else then foge and fogII but still...A great big kudos to you sirs.

But, I have a small complaint. You see, one of the things me and my wife like to do with our free time is play grand-scale strategy games in hotseat mode, and that wheighted in the balance of choosing between foge and paradox's new antiquity title...but the fact that you have to be connected to internet and the load on our limited bandwith is quite problematic (also the fact you can't export the battles to fogII...but I guess that's a complicated problem). So yeah, wanted to voice the complaint of not being able to have hotseat offline for Foge, which quickly made sure we had to go back to civ4 (a title which it seems we will be playing 'till our eyes give up on us for lack of an alternative).

Again, a big thumbs up for your work and the contact you maintain with the player base, you gentlemen astound me.

Thanks Butchbird. Your wife is playing strategy games? Wow, I'm impressed!

About hotseat, that is indeed a limitation as everything must be uploaded to the Slitherine server. Are you sure it is too much for your connection?

You never know when there's an armchair general sleeping inside an individuals body.

Well it's true we have a very limited bandwight, don't need much usually, 'bout a hundred gb? From what I remember, for 3-4 hours of gaming (while doing chores and interacting with a young child throughout the game), the company site indicated 0.66 gb of trafic (we checked before and after more or less), Which I figured were the information sent to the server. Theres also the disadvantage that turns took a longer time loading since you had to send the saved game through the server And then load the turn for every player. Now I'm not necessarly speaking about FOGE, but is it much difficult to "add a hotseat mode to the the sinple payer mode"(don't know how to phrase it exactly) for a game more or less programed like FOGE? I remember there had been a similar complaint to civ5 and they had added hotseat through a patch, but then I guess it must depend alot on the engine?

Having multiplayer without any connection to the server would indeed mean a rather major rework of the architecture, so won't happen anytime soon I fear, sorry.
