FoG II Terrain For Medieval Plus Mod UPDATE 5/5/23

Post by Mord »

UPDATED 5/5/23: Fixed any problems that the Sublime Porte era patch/update may have caused.

UPDATED (Reconquista): Spent the last 12 hours finishing what the dlc added. Medieval is now fully updated to FoG II terrain. All biomes are covered, Desert, Middle East, Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and Tropical.

ORIGINAL POST: Through a community collaboration between myself, Adebar, Paul59, and mazex, we have finished converting Medieval's terrain to FoG II. As well as completely overhauling the winter textures to better fit with the FoG II art. The summer textures are based on mazex's excellent Texmod, with modifications by Paul and myself to get them to display properly in Medieval. Adebar created some wonderful trees, Marsh and rocky hill contours for the winter maps that look spectacular in game. While I worked on snow, crops, and other odds and ends.

Special thanks to Patrick Ward and Paul for answering my modding questions, and alansaund (on Steam) for pointing me in the right direction.

You'll find that this version works perfectly with all Epic Battles.

NOTE: You should have zero issues using this mod in SP. However, you may want to finish your MP games before installing. It still hasn't been fully tested in MP so your mileage may vary.

INSTALLATION:

UPDATING TO THE RECONQUISTA VERSION If you are updating from the older Base Game version of the mod go to: Field Of Glory II Medieval/Data/objects and delete the "NorthernEurope" folder. Then go to Field Of Glory II Medieval/Data/TILES and delete the "NorthernEurope_Base" and "NorthernEurope_Overlay" folders. Then follow the installation instructions below, minus the backup procedure.

Go to your FoG II Medieval Data folder. For me it's in Drive/Steam/steamapps/common/Field Of Glory II Medieval/Data. Back up your "TILES" and "objects" folders. The simplest way for me is to just create a zip file for both and leave them in the folder. Now extract the two folders ("TILES" and "objects") from the zipped mod into your Data folder and overwrite when prompted. That's it.

Adebar preferred some of the older textures I created, and I had a request on Steam for different crops, so I am providing links for some alternate terrain. Install instructions are in the zips.

Gosh, there were a LOT of battles in mediaeval model villages... :D

Seriously, thank you - it looks great. If only the engine would allow more figures per unit.

You can increase the unit model count. There's a guide a couple threads down. Pretty easy once you do it a few times. I make my light foot 5, cav 8, light cav 4, knights 8, dismounted knights 8, any dismounted cav 8. It's not much but it adds to the atmosphere. It'll be better once they get some more unit types into the game. My Ancient's battles look pretty epic with 3 elephants, 2 hvy chariots, 3 light chariots, 8 cataphracts/camels/cav, 3 light artillery, plus what I stated above for lights.

Mmm, yes, but not to units having hundreds of people (unless you want them to die/look disordered in small clumps).

It is what it is. The engine is locked at 16 models (which sucks). The best that can be done is to boost the numbers on a few of the smaller units to make the battles feel a bit more populated. The best part is when you see an elephant corpse (or destroyed chariot) on the battlefield, you won't ever see that in a vanilla game.

Hi Mord,

Why haven't you used the Ancients Southern European Mountains in the mod, do you prefer the new ones?

Also, I much prefer the new Medieval Southern European trees and forests. I have added them back in for my personal copy of the mod.

cheers

It would be great if some of this can make it into the base game like with the TT mod units. Good work from all! Thanks!

I did. I just forgot to remove the DDS files for the Mediterranean mountains. It doesn't effect what's displayed in game though.

Did you test them? They show up for me.

Yeah, of course. I fully expect people to tweak it however they like. I left some Medieval textures in, here and there, myself.

Huh. I just installed a fresh objects folder from the zip and they are showing. I don't get it. There should be MountA and MountB files in the SouthernEurope objects folder both dated 2/20/21.

My OCD wouldn't leave me alone so I removed the superfluous files and re-uploaded. If you have time at some point, give them a test, and see if you encounter the same problem.

I reloaded your original mod into another Medieval installation, and it worked fine. I have no idea what went wrong before, but it was definitely showing the new Southern European mountains, and not the Mod's Ancients versions. Maybe I didn't copy and paste the Objects folder, but I was seeing the Mod's Ancient Southern European trees, so God knows what was going on!
