Both in my completed vanilla campaign and across the 39 and 40 dlc's...I'm finding the heroes too OP for my taste.
Thinking about starting over with heroes option disabled.
I play on the General level and do not use the power 4 to farm prestige. I choose to focus on a "tactical" campaign...op initiative...master of blitz...perimeter control...met planning...agg deployment...terrain expert.
Anyone played thru a campaign without heroes...pros/cons?

Re: Campaign Without Heroes
I havent played without heroes yet. For me heros are a super fun part in the game that delivers some extra spice.
But i will try out that "heroic showdown" challenge soon. That might even the impact heroes have.
What negative trait(s) you wanna choose ? Btw i would suggest aux forces as pos trait, if you really want to play without heroes. Its a nice way to enhance your core forces and delivers intersting options if you can spare the prestige. Recon planes for example, strat bomber(s) and sometimes at guns are my preferred aux picks.

Re: Campaign Without Heroes
Not entirely a non-hero playthrough, but I did play the game with 25% hero chance. I was able to finish all DLCs with all secondary goals except 1 in SCW (Merida I remember) at Generalissimus difficulty without much pain. I did not use power 4 as well, but of course I still need some prestige from surrender mechanics. In my opinion, SCW is the single most difficult campaign of my entire playthrough. You have worse equipment if you don't farm. You have less experience, and at Generalissimus difficulty, enemy has 20 more base accuracy, meaning their accuracy can be 90 and yours only 50 without recons. Of course, you don't have many heroes (either no hero or 25%). And your retarded Spanish allies constantly consume your precious prestige. The first 5 missions were really difficult for me. My prestige was constantly around 1500 after I replenished all units. Eventually, I come up with some tactics that work well for me, and I got net positive prestige after Ebro
. Here are some tips.
1. Even though you don't need power 4, encirclement is still a very effective way of reducing your casualties. I took deadly grasp in SCW, and it turned out to be crucial.
2. In addition to your Spanish allies, your AT, AA and artillery are also a huge prestige blackhole. They are much more expensive than your tanks, recons and fighters, bombers. If you have to frequently replenish your AT, AA or artilleries, even just in turn 0, you will still have prestige issues. I don't always bring AT in all missions, and most of time, they did nothing in a mission. They suffer a 10 initiative penalty after moving if you don't have meticulous planning, enemy units will fire first, and you are going to lose prestige. AA is a must, but 88 mm is not. If you take anti-air veteran, your anti-air gun with rapid fire x1.5 can almost shoot down any enemy aircrafts. Artilleries are not that great with low experience. They have very low kill chance, they can only suppress a few units, which will recover if you don't encircle them. But they are so expensive both in cores and prestige while so fragile. Even being protected by AA, enemy bombers will still attack them, and it hurts. The entrenchment killer effect is essential, but artilleries only kills 2 (1 if you take entrenchment slog). I end up bringing only 1 or 2 in some missions in SCW.
3. Some secondary goals are just too expensive. If you can't afford them, just skip it. CP rewards are mostly lame except for heroes and Verdeja 2 anyway.
4. Dead allies don't consume prestige. Some times, just let them die.
5. Farm some prestige near the end of missions, otherwise, you will never have enough prestige.
6. Unlike infantries in later game, they don't have very high hard attack in SCW. Sometimes, put your recons in a city is not a bad choice. You get base entrenchment level to protect you, and your recons and tanks are actually cheaper than infantry.
If you find a way to finish SCW without heroes and power 4, you should be able to finish all subsequent missions. I do agree that some heroes are too OP, but I think hero is one of the most fun parts of this game. I wish dev could balance hero abilities rather than just take them out, or at least let us mod heroes abilities.
