What is your favorite ridiculous unit?

Post by brettz123 »

I have a couple stupid good units that I love

Flame Tank - 15 strength with Rapid Fire 1.5, Thorough Preparation, and Hit and Run.... no one ever gets to attack back.
Azul Infantry - 15 Strength with Oleh Dir and Butcher
Sturer Emil - 15 Strength with Double Support, Tank Killer, and Camouflage

These are the three units that just chew through anything that gets in the way. The Sturer Emil with camouflage can take 4-5 tanks per turn defending. Endless hilarity ensues.

15-strong 203mm or 21cm gun + Fast_deployment + Double_Attack + Zero_Slots: the long-range death with absolutely no retaliation

But these types of Marvel-like heroes destroy the game (just as Edmon's Four), so I am replaying DLC with self-imposed restrictions to keep the balance imagined by Kerensky

My big ones in AO right now:
- 15-20 strenght Azul in halftracks, with Oleh Dir, Crippling Blow, First Strike and the Steamroller award. If it's not a tank or sitting in 8+ entrenchment, it WILL be overrun.
- 15 strength 21cm Mörser with Zero Slots, Rapid Fire 1.5 and Elsa Kloß. 5-hex radius death zone for enemy artillery, and it can wreck a unit a turn scoring an average 5 kills and 5+ suppressed.
- KV-2 with First Strike, Vigilant and Entrenchment Killer 4x. I simply refer to it as The Doorknocker.

This one. OMG! With Steamroller it is an absolute monster!! Along with Oleh Dir, I also like to give it Ignores Entrenchment. It then blows through even those urban units that are deeply entrenched. First Strike is unnecessary though because with Dir it already will have an initiative advantage and strike first especially with its likely high exp level at that point and you're not going to be attacking high initiative units like tanks in open ground anyway with it. If you need more initiative, I sometimes add Superior Maneuver because it's movement will be much higher than any other inf unit it attacks. Plus, I find that hero of little value anywhere else most of the time anyway.

20 Strength 21cm with Consolidator+Zero Slot+Arty Support, protect you from everything on the ground and destroy everything in range.
Ju 87 with Double Attack+Rapid Fire 1.5x+Unyielding, destroy any AA in one turn, not to say tanks.
Flak 8.8cm with Camouflage+Double Support+Expert Support, feel the clean air.

1. On any Rapid Fire 1.5x tank (I had a Trubia tank unit with this roaming around England successfully!) - Butcher, Ignores Entrenchment, No Retaliation. Clears city hexes out of infantry with multiple overruns.
2. Rudel with basically any combination that adds the traits you did not select - so extra Double Move if you choose Double Attack and so on.
3. First Strike, Adolf Galland and Heinrich Bar on a single plane - sufficient to say that a He 112 with this combination was shooting down Spitfires in 1940 better than more modern fighters.

I put Oleh Dir on my Steamroller-trained overstrength Pioniere with Consolidator, Zero Slot and Hit and Run (=25 HP)
Also I gpt Meticulous Planning (Ground units can split moves), Aggressive Deployment (can attack after disembarking halftracks) and Perimeter Control.
This 25 Str. Inf can go into a crowded area, kill up to 4 units and even drive back out afterwards (if I set it up correctly).
It is totally bonkers.
I also got a Tank with that Combo that makes units instantly surrender. So usually I disentrench some frontline infantry, instasurrender it with the tank and then drive in with Oleh Dir.
He can oneshot 4 20str conscript units in 1 turn if he happens to come across them.

At the end of 1941 DLC hes got more than 5.400 kills

The only thing that holds him back is his 4 ammo.
Btw. that also why this:

is not entirely true. Emil got 3 ammo.
Thats why I stopped training steamroller on it.
I recommend using an 8.8 Flak with camouflage hero. Not for the ammo but for usability

Does anybody know, if the Tank Killer counts in defence as well?

What was that huge mortar that was available for 3000 PP? Can't remember it's name off hand (Karl something) but 3000 PP. Too funny.

My favorite one is simple: 10.5 cm artillery. No enhancements. Good results at a cheap price. I know that this is like ordering vanilla ice cream but if you are on a budget, it's the best way to go.

My most recent niche unit is Sdkfz 7/1. It is very cheap, it costs 230, and it takes only 2 slots. It has rapid fire x2, it has 10 initiative. It means it almost always strike first except for late war tanks. The only downside of it is its very low soft attack (only 6). I don't have many hero in my recent playthrough, as I turned the hero chance to 25%, but I got a butcher on him. Man, that is just a infantry grinder on open terrain. It also provides AT support, AA support. Even without butcher, it can still deal 5 to 6 damage without taking much return fire. It is also a deadly weapon against recons, or any fighters or dive bombers. It is so versatile. And it is so cheap.

There was a small bug that allowed it to fire in support without regard for its ammo during the AI's turn. I've seen it fire eight times in a row, destroying four tanks in the process.

It might have been fixed by now though. Even if it still works, it's probably not something that will be around much longer.
