Sengoku Jidai - 2021 team event - The Emperor's Throne - Round 2

Post by ahuyton »

Game Two - Peasant Revolt 1627-47

The people of Shensi province in the North West rebel and Warlords emerge. The Emperor's armies desperately try to stem the tide.

Ming Northern Army 1597-1683 (Gdod) v Tribal Rebels 1595-1700 (Kiwiwarlord)

As usual the game is large, wide field and agricultural terrain. Equal points this time... (apologies to Kiwiwarlord and his team for the last round, where I rather favoured Gdod's team with a 200 point bonus, which was a bit too much. Oh well...)

Could Kiwiwarlord's team please launch the games when they are ready, let's please aim to start by 15 March, if possible.

Games

Kiwiwarlord v ahuyton
Snugglebunnies v PompeytheFlatulent
GentlemanRanker v Dang
SMjohnso77 v Gdod

GentlemanRanker’s peasants beat Ming the Merciless’s Imperial army by 11 – 49.

The map was heavily forested; the Ming had a fine hill on the baseline upon which to deploy, but opted to arrange their myriad units on open ground at its’ base. When it became apparent that the sneaky peasants had no intention of advancing respectfully across the open ground on the Ming left wing, but would infiltrate as close as possible through the forest, the Mighty Ming reacted decisively, he:
1) Sent numerous units into the forest on his right wing, overmatching the rebels attacking from that direction, and setting up a potentially winning situation. Tick.
2) Turned his centre around to march back to the hill, so as to force any peasants emerging from the forest to advance under a withering hail of fire. Good move.
3) Advanced his left wing, including all his artillery, into the open ground, directly into charge range of the hiding rebel warriors and cavalry. Huh, you what ...? Ouch!

One can only conclude that, overcome with ennui at the prospect of having to fight with peasants, the Magnificent Ming decided his honour lay in boldly advancing and crushing them, using only his personal bodyguard. How did that work out for ya Ming?

SnuggleBunnies (Rebels) draws with pompeytheflatulent (Ming) 50-50

The shambolic mobs that remained of the two armies drew apart as night fell at last on bloody rice paddies and burning villages.

Round 2, The Emperor's Throne

KiwiWarlord's Peasant Army 50% - Alan's Ming Army 62% Win for the Tribal Rebels

A very hard fought game where the Rebels lined up and charged the Ming line on an open battlefield with some rough ground in the centre.
Fortunately for the Rebels the Ming sent a large contingent on a Flank March which took some considerable time to arrive giving Rebels just enough time to gain a 'close shave' Victory.
Peasants were fortunate their cavalry outnumbered the Ming cavalry for most of the battle due to the Ming Flank March

From the office of GDod, Captain to the Reincarnated Wanyan Yongji - Seventh Emperor of the mighty Jurchen Jin dynasty.

Dearest commanders of the Eight Banners of the Jianzhou, Haixi and Yeren tribes, greetings and apologies for the emperors delay in wishing you success.

Rumors of my death in Round 1 were wildly exaggerated. My untimely delay in beginning round 2 is due to having been reincarnated, oops, I mean having a beauty spa and facial at the Palace day spa and all you can eat buffet centre The emperor wishes you all the best sport putting down the peasants in the Shensi province.
Be warned however they have very sharp objects that may cause injury. If this occurs please fill out compensation form 1AOuch and forward it to the nearest Imperial administer nearest your hometown. We have dispatched appropriate wheeled cages for you to transport your captured peasants back to the rice fields whence they came. Please complete form 2AWow! for requisitioning additional cages due to a decisive win on the field.

Below is proof that the Gang of 4 in charge of the peasant rebellion are really underhanded and sneaky, and just plain unpleasant dinner guests. Moreover, our eye witness definitely overheard them say they want to kill the emperor.

So far wins for the Rebels under the command of Kiwiwarlord and GentlemanRanker.

Pompey pulled off a heroic draw against the mighty Snuggles.

We await the result of the encounter between Emperor Gdod and SMJohso77, but it it clear that the rebels have captured the throne for Round 3.

To all Ming generals fighting rebels of Shaanxi province:

Despite the best efforts of our brave Ming soldiers, the fierce charge and foul body odor from these unwashed rebels proved too much. With the series of defeats it now appears almost certain that the filthy rebels will seize the Imperial capital of Beijing. Worse still, news of the defeats have caused our glorious leader, the Chongzhen Emperor GDod of the Ming Dynasty, to relapse into a delusional state. He has returned to inhabiting whatever fantasy realm he has concocted for himself, no doubt since that is preferable to the current desperate times we find ourselves in.

Well, I for one, will not sit idly by and await the coming sack of Beijing. I suggest we all gather whatever personal retinue of loyal soldiers we could muster and head for the northern frontier, where general Wu Sangui in remains in command with the best units of the Ming army. We shall bring our emperor out of Beijing with us in disguise, while leaving a body double dressed in the emperor's clothes hanging from a tree behind the Forbidden City to cover our escape. In this case we should be thankful of our emperor's wild ravings and mental delusions as it will no doubt help us slip through the rebel roadblocks being set up around the capital.

General Wu Sangui has been in secret negotiations with Prince Dorgon, de facto ruler of the Qing, about opening the gates on the Great Wall and joining forces against the rebel scrum. Now before you all roll your eyes and say: "That old turncoat Pangpei is up to his old tricks again, pulling another Alcibiades." I want you to think of it not as us defecting to our age old enemies the Manchus, but instead as us using the opportunity to get our sweet, juicy revenge against these filthy, stinky rebels.

Pangpei, Ming general assigned to fighting rebels in Shaanxi province.

To the royal physicians treating Emperor GDod of the Ming Dynasty:

As per your request I have looked into this 'Wanyan Yongji' character our emperor claims to be communicating with. It appears that he was one of the last emperors of the Jin dynasty during Genghis Khan's time, and he died in a palace coup that placed his nephew on the throne, right as the Mongols were closing in all around. Perhaps our emperor sees in this 'Wanyan Yongji' figure a kindred spirit, given our current situation? Well, I hope this information is of help in treating our emperor of his reoccurring condition, I know it is not easy to do your jobs while on the run from the capital in disguise dodging rebel patrols and roadblocks, and I wish you the best of luck.

It seems that our esteemed Emperor has overlooked the need to meet the troublesome rebels in battle. I have consulted the Gods and they advise that they now see the mighty Kiwiwarlord as Emperor of the Ming. Should brave but tardy Emperor Gdod defeat the rebellious SMJohnso77 it will not affect their judgement...

And so we pass to Game Three...

Pangpei
Pangpei Propaganda continues to distract my loyal retainers from their imperial duty. My spies are certain he's up to his turncoat tricks to set himself up as defacto ruler whilst he's in possession of his imperial majesty. The palace can assure the populace that the nephew was found dead some weeks ago apparently after a rather nasty knife accident whilst peeling a quince. I implore all loyal subjects to resist the lies of the underhanded rebel propagandists and defeat these peasants so the natural order can be re-established in the provinces. Emperor Wanyan Yongji has released this portrait to assure you all of his full recovery after a short bout of terminal illness.
