Playing army from different boks against each other?

Post by big_gazza »

Hi,
new to FOG and Ancients wargaming in general and I have a quick question.

My wargames group and I have decided to start FOW for ancients games. Now one member of my group has bought book 1 Rise of Rome and I have bought book 5 Legions Triumphant.

Now my question is can you game using army from separate books against each other?

I know it may be a bit historical but we are starting out and army will be a bit limited.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Gazza

May I first mention that it is FOG not FOW.

All the books so far enable you to play armies from different books against each other and the points value system for troops helps facilitate this.

This will also help if you plan on playing tournaments in future.

A tournament I am attending this weekend has players using armies from 7 different books. Other tournaments may be themed and restrict it to certain books or periods.

Hope this helps.

You can play armies from different books against each other without any problems. You say which books you have bought but not which armies. Do you already have armies from those books ? If you are starting from scratch, why not pick some armies between you that were historical opponents ? Maybe Rome vs Carthage. Then you can add troops such as Spanish, Gauls, Numidians and eventually build full armies for these also. Then you will be able to play a range of historical match-ups.

Hi,
my friend is going for a Carthaginian (sp?) army and I was wanting to go for Imperial Romans. He has the figures but I have still to get my army but I was wanting to use the Warlord plastic Romans to keep the costs down.

Thanks for the help. I'm new to the game and this period in history so any help with the game or period is great.

thanks

Gaza, the points system in the army list books are specifically so you can have reasonably fair battles, whatever period of history your army is from.

Well if you want matched armies you could go for Republican Roman (covers Punic Wars vs Carthage up to Julius Caesar) and you can still use plastic figures for that (Wargames Factory I think if Warlord are the Imperials).

But if you choose Imperial Roman you've got a lot of different historical opponents to play against and you can still play Rome vs Carthage with your friend (just not quite the correct Romans but who cares anyway ?).

If you want 28mm I presume you are aware of the Wargames Factory range as well as Warlord Games?

lol, myself i am taking a break from buying anymore FOW stuff, and am busy working on 28mm gauls/celts. Still I will play FOW but man that needs better understandable rules. I am not to into the special rules that keep coming up, it is starting to bother me a tad.

hey Big-Gazza!

You leaving FoW! heheh..!

I decided to dive into ancients myself as well! I won the rule book to FoG at the IWF tournament and have quickly acquired all the supplements and am having an army painted as we speak!

This game looks quite fun and I hope there is a following similar to FoW!

See ya round!

McBoob,

welcome to the dark side...

C'mon down to the Nati on June 20th when we are having a 1 day event.... a full listing is in the tournaments section of this forum...

Even if you don't have enough lead ready to go by then, give us a wish-list and there are several of us that would gladly lend you the lead...

Hi,
LOL. Not leaving, just on holiday. Fancy playing something completely different and not having to paint in shades of grey and green.
