Historicon '09 FoG events July 16-19, Lancaster PA

Post by babyshark »

Field of Glory at Historicon 2009

NASAMW will run three tournaments using the Field of Glory (FoG) rules at Historicon. All three events will be run in 15mm. They will also be run in 25mm with the following caveat: if not enough players sign up for a particular event to allow a viable tournament, the organizers reserve the right to cancel that event. 25mm events will be played on an 8x5 table using 40mm for a movement unit. All players, in both scales, are encouraged to contact Marc Crotteau at juvenileshark@yahoo.com in advance of Historicon to say which scale they are likely to play. This will help immensely with allocating available table space.

There will be prizes based on tournament results and for best presented army.

Thursday: Field of Glory Mini Themes

We will be trying a new event design this year in an effort to create more historical matchups, while retaining the flexibility of an open event. Each player should bring an army list from any published FoG army list book. Prior to the start of the event the players will be broken down into pools of 4-8 armies, matched as closely as possible by date and region. Each round will be matched up within the pools. Secondary consideration will be given to separating players from the same club.

There will be a 15mm event at 650 points for sure. If there is enough interest a 25mm event will also be run at 600 points. 25mm players are encouraged to bring a 15mm backup army.

First round: noon – 3:00
Second round: 4:00 – 7:00
Third round: 8:00 – 11:00

Please check in no later than 11:45 in order to ensure that the event can start on time.

Friday: Field of Glory Theme tournament "The Dark Ages"

Three rounds, starting at 9:00am. The 15mm event will be played at 800 points; the 25mm event will be played at 800 points. Players may bring any army from the following list:

From Wolves From the Sea
Post-Roman British
Early Welsh
Later Scots-Irish
Merovingian Frankish
Later Pictish
Early Slavic
Middle Anglo-Saxon
Astur-Leonese
Andalusian
Early Navarese
Carolingian Frankish
Viking
Magyar
Great Moravian
Early Scots
Rus
Norse-Irish
Early Medieval French
Early Medieval German
Norman
Early Polish
Anglo-Danish

From Decline and Fall
Early Byzantine
Later Visigothic
African Vandal
Italian Ostrogoth
Lombard
Early South Slav
Umayyad Arab

From Legions Triumphant
Foedorate Roman, western
Early Frankish, etc.
Early Anglo-Saxon, etc.
Early Ostrogothic, etc.
Gepid or Early Lombard

First round: 9:00am
Second round: 1:30pm
Third round: 7:00pm

Saturday: Field of Glory Open tournament

Three rounds, starting at 9:00am. Players may bring any army from any of the published FoG army list books. The 15mm event will be played at 800 points; the 25mm event will be played at 800 points.

First round: 9:00am
Second round: 1:30pm
Third round: 7:00pm

Important change to the 25mm events!

Post by babyshark »

Please note: 25mm will be played at 800 points

Due to popular demand, the 25mm Theme and Open (that is to say, the Friday and Saturday events) will be played at 800 points, not 650 as had been previous written in the announcement. I have edited the announcement to reflect the new point level. Thursday's Mini-theme's event will still run at the originally scheduled 600 points, due to the shorter time slots on that day.

Since 800 points is a lot for a 25mm army, I ask that any 25mm players who have extra figures bring some along so that other--less fortunate--players will have a pool of figures to borrow from at need. After Historicon I will be seeking feedback from the 25mm player pool regarding the effect that the increased army size had on the events. Future tournaments will reflect the input received.

It appears all FoG events at HISTORICON require the players to bring their own armies. Is that correct?

I would assume so.. But i am sure folks have loaners available if you ask far enough in advance... I won't be there this year.. Maybe next? Maybe Coldwars? Time will tell. :)

I don't understand this. Why are Vikings in the 'Dark Ages' comp? They weren't in the Dark Ages  . They were in the brightest period of history :!:

Poor Vikings. So misunderstood!

So sorry I can't come and show you the error of your ways

Correct. However, it is not difficult to arrange to borrow figures to flesh out an army that you wish to use. Or even to arrange an entire loaner army if need be. Contact me off list or by PM if you need to make arrangements. My fees are reasonable.

I see where the misunderstanding arises. The title "The Dark Ages" comes from the fact that it was cloudy all the time, not from anything to do with the retreat of civilization, or barbarian invasions, or something of that sort. Cloudy for several centuries.

As an aside, I can always count on an explanation like that to get my wife the history professor all riled up. Useful when home life gets boring. 8)

Planning a similar event and am curious.
Will the 650 point event use 4x6 tables?

The plan is for all the 15mm events to be on 4x6 and the 25mm to be on 5x8 tables. Using the differing point totals on the same table size forces players to think about their armies (and their terrain strategy) differently. It adds variety (and therefore spice) to the games.

IMHO, of course.

See the OP: 40mm MU in the 25mm scale.

K Having just brought a 25mm Byzantine army on e-bay, might try my hand at a 25mm tourney for a change. Got most of the figures I need, but might need to borrow some when there.

What is the likelyhood of the 25mm going ahead, I'll bring a 15mm version just in case etc.

Cheers

25mm looks like it is go for throttle up, as I have had a number of inquiries.

May I suggest that you bring armies in both scales, regardless? It is always very useful to have a couple people able to float in order to balance numbers.

Will do, at 25mm I know I am going to be short of some bases as it stands.

Talk to me about what you specifically need. I suspect we can arrange for some loaner bases to flesh out your army.
