Commander Basing

Post by TWRNZ »

Hi,

I believe I read on another forum that FOG commanders can be based on round bases and that as such it makes the commanders standout compared to other elements. Is this correct or does it create issues and is not therefore acceptable?

Trying to think of ways that Greek hoplite, Roman, Carthaginain & Gallic commanders can be modelled.

I look forward to your replies.

I use round bases and it's never been a problem.

You can see where they are easily.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I haven't played FOG so my question is as a FOG newbie. I'll therefore ask for some further clarification.

The rules indicate that if you use a commander in the frontline you place it in the front and displace the front element, page 99. But the fact you have pictures of Gallic types one can assume you have not encountered a problem with commanders mounted in such a way. I'm sure they are fighting in the frontline on occasion!

Is that because "you declare" they are fighting in the front rank?

Your command stands look excellent BTW. I assume they are 15mm, if so what dimensions are the stands?

They certainly stand out on the table as illustrated so well by your battlefield photo. I must say it is great to see visually pleasing armies in use supported by good terrain.

There are several different ways of "putting" the general into the front rank. I like placing it in the rear rank and I put the displaced base behind him. Others place the general at the rear and then turn it sideways to represent fighting in the front rather than just with a BG.

As to basing I like the 40 x 40 square base with one figure for a TC, 2 for a FC, and three for an IC.

Cheers

I think you will find one to three figures on a 40x40 base stands out perfectly well from a mass of 4 hoplites on 40 x 15 bases.

For a commander to join a BG, (by the book) he has to be in edge to edge and corner to corner contact with one of its bases. You can't do that with a round base.

But is no problem in reality - been there, done that :D

IMHO the round bases look much better for Generals.

So seeing as its only a game then if it feels good do it

It's not correct, it does create some very minor issues and is AFAIK acceptable by most opponents & tournaments.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.

Based on the responses here I think I shall try some round bases and hopefully not be tossed out of a tournament as a result.

Personally I have not been adventurous enough to try the round bases, though they look nice. If my opponent wanted to use round bases I would not have a problem as they are short changing themselves on command radius slightly (I think). If you are entering a tournament just take along some 40x40mm bases and if your opponent cracks the shits over your round bases just stick them on the square bases temporarily.

One of the locals uses round bases and it has never presented a problem. It actually helps in one circumstance - we've had on more than one occasion a general (normally based) attached to a BG that lost a stand and when we were doing melees we gave the general's stand a dice accidentally (just looked like another stand in the BG). This doesn't happen with a general on a round base.

We use the normal shaped, mounted size bases. We use 3 minies on foot or 2 mounted minies for our command bases. NORMALLY, our command bases have been mounted models anyway. We use our period, non-special character minies.

THAT said....round sounds like a good idea to try. The round ones shown in the photos stand out AND seem to belong/fit in with the units.
