Oil Consumption and Supply

Post by nats »

Ive been playing the Barbarossa campaign and have been running out of oil quite quickly probably because I have been moving my fleets around etc as well as all my troops and planes. I have got the one oilfield in Romania. However when I look at the list for oil resources it says neither the Germans nor Italians have any oil resources. Well that may be true as it is Romanian actually but it doesnt seem to show anywhere how much oil I get every turn that I can see. But I am getting some although it is only a small amount. Is this oil consumption affected by difficulty in some way as I am playing with slight Russian advantage?

My main question is how is this correct I cant remember Germany running out of oil during Barbarossa especially not by the end of the first year? What am I doing wrong here? Should I be leaving my subs and fleet alone (not very realistic). Theres no way I could reach the other Russian / Arab oilfields by the time my oil starts running out.

And I am still nowhere near Moscow by December even on this lowish diffiuclty - damn those Germans must have really moved in reality.

Looks like I might have to restart again on even difficulty!!

A few things.
1)How many armour do you have? Those burn up oil at a MASSIVE rate when they both move & attack on the same turn
2)Motorized are better, but they also burn up 2+ points per turn in that situation.
3)How many planes & which types? While planes can't move & attack, fighters can burn a lot of oil if they ground attack, are intercepted in that attack, and then intercept during the opponents turn.

As a general rule, you should mainly move armour/aircraft by rail movement unless you're in combat, and then every move/attack has to justify the oil spent. Unless you grab the middle east and/or caucasian oil, even with careful usage the Germans will run out of oil by 1943/44.

BTW, German "offmap" oil is 11 per turn, Italian is 1, UK 10, France 5, USSR 5 and the US 40. Plus oilfields on the map.
