This league is aimed at people like myself who are looking for opportunities to play FoG2 casually and socially, yet in an organised way. The competitive part comes naturally, from the victory conditions. The idea is a "constant" ("ever"-lasting or ever-green) league, based on challenging each other along a table; fighting battles and getting points (depending on battle results) as well as always switching armies with each other (yes, always, after battle, independent of battle results) to create variety over time. The social part is not at all about having a strict conversation each turn on the chat. Just the type of chat that I've been having in my games with most of you guys (no names) and have come to enjoy so much (and is part of why I play FoG2): light, friendly, on- and off-topic (FoG2 as well as real life stuff), when we have something to say. Not really commenting every turn with at least 256 letters... But what I do want to avoid is the 100% competitive oriented approach, where the chat starts with "GL HF" and ends with "GG" and nothing in between, if you understand what I mean. The league comes in four separate sections, with armies covering a specific year (300 BC, 500 AD, 900 AD, and 1240 AD), and this thread refers to the 1240 AD section.

Yes, you can. But this is likely to pick off only when season 10 of the Digital League is finalised.

Bear in mind you will only get to use them for one battle and then will swap to using whatever your last opponent had.

For that reason, it really doesn't matter much which army you pick to start with. It is probably best if people pick as wide a variety of armies as possible, rather than trying to pick something "good".

That is why I picked Lithuanian. I don't think I would want to use them in every battle!

True, these are very good points: select armies that you think would be fun (or at least challenging and different and thus enjoyable) to play with and against, and that create a nice and wide variety of armies in the league.

Not keen on Mongol armies generally as they are too horse-based and float around without getting down to any nitty-gritty. I find them annoying to play against. I'm fine with just starting with French and moving around.

There was a discussion concerning Mongols and horse armies in the main forum. Any thoughts on either creating 2 leagues with one as a horse army and their enemies and the other as a non-horse army and their enemies? Or perhaps a single league but have phases switching between those two types of battles and appropriate armies?

No, it would be one league comprised of each of the armies that the participating players select from THIS post. That is, all armies whose time periods cover 1240 AD.
