Hello. My first post on the forum. First of all, I would like to say that I'm not what you can call an experienced player on wargames but I recently started with FOG2 and I'm loving it. Still trying to get the hang of the game but I have a doubt.
Yesterday, in a battle against the AI I decided to see if I could conceal units on a forest for a surprise flank attack. So, after deployment, as soon as battle started, I harassed roman infantry with horses and chariots to lure them to my left flank and had two loose order Warbands hidden in the woods to my right. As you can see here: http://imgur.com/a/uBeIuIi
But, those irregular foot in the distance came directly to my units (as the arrow shows). It seems they knew where they were all along.
My questions:
- was it a coincidence?
- Is It not possible to conceal units?
- Doesn't the mechanic work against the AI?
I'm sorry for my doubt but I'm still trying to learn the mechanics.
Thank you and great games to all!
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have the "Rise of the AI" mod installed.

Re: Concealed/hidden units
Concealment does work vs the ai, even better than vs players, as it forgets about units it can no longer see.
The ai will probe for hidden units, especially if they have lights, so it's not cheating, just wad. Again, this is sometimes done to extreme, as the ai will often methodically press to the very edge of the field before wheeling to move towards where your visible troops are. Thus, if you mass most of your troops on one flank, particularly if concealed by terrain, you can get a jump on the ai as it will dutifully probe and clear your empty sectors tying units it could be using more effectively elsewhere.

Thank you. Just a note: I didn't mean to imply that it was cheating. I just didn't know if it was possible to conceal units (the manual says so but doesn't go further on the topic), ir if the units, in fact, were hidden (as there is no indication in game) and, if they were, if it was a limitation against the AI.
Re: Concealed/hidden units
To get tons of precise information, you'd better learn how to use the Editor and set up simple scenarios.
In the present case, the manual only says : "Foot can hide in buildings, woods and some other terrain. They can only be seen by nearby enemy or if they shoot." So you create an empty map, put an enemy foot in a forest and see how close your own unit has to be to be able to see it and you get the answer.
Etc.
There's a nice basic tutorial about creating maps : https://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewto ... lit=editor
Re: Concealed/hidden units
Yes, I read that but it only says "nearby", doesn't specify what distance.
But thanks for the tip

Re: Concealed/hidden units
Infantry are concealed in a forest, [built-up area] or marsh square until an enemy unit is within two squares and has a line of sight to it. However, if the hidden unit looses arrows, they will be revealed at any range.
Cavalry are never concealed in a marsh. They are visible in a forest square unless you have another forest square between it and the enemy (in other words, you can't hide cavalry at the edge of a forest, you need to put them further back.)
