Post Roman British question

Post by recharge »

OK, I have a very simple confusion about the Post Roman British list:

Why are they called "Spearmen"; when they are "light spear" - "swordsmen".??

Just seems a little strange :?

"Light spear" and "swordsmen" are functional game terms, they do not imply posession of light spears or swords. "Spearmen" is an vaguely historical description, something a contemporary might have used.

My main question on the R-B Spearmen is more to do with the unit sizes. Essentially: Why are the Drilled Spearment not in BGs of 4 to 8 (the same as the Roman Cohorts they are the continuation of)?

Also what about the option to upgrade some foot to Votadini (they are available to the Welsh but not for a Romano-British army which I would say is the appropriate option for Vortigern who did use Votadini against the Saxons.

.
Because the authors realized cohorts of 4 bases were a bit too maneuverable and over effective sometime between publishing the LT lists and the WftS lists...
